clam on Sandyland Beach, Carpinteria

On a small stretch of sand in Carpinteria, I saw this clam.  Is he happy as a clam, I don't know.  Do you?

Nice Clam....  Glad you are happy I'm sure the clam is as long as no one picks him/her up and places him/her in a steam  pot.

Fascinating bit of life. I noticed the shell gets lighter toward the edges and of course richer at its core indicating it grows outwardly...It sort of has rings on it like a tree would that probably marks its age...I enjoyed this post thank you

A - as a stager the first thing I notice are the beautiful colors of the natural sand and clam - nature never gets it wrong. I bet this would make a really cool black and white. Have you tried Ribbet.com? Great for framing, colorizing and branding your photos!

Diane,

That is true about landing in a stockpot, however this creature has to worry about all the seabirds that eat shellfish.

Richie,

Like you I was fascinated by the coloring, I have seen the little versions of these clams.  I had not thought of the rings, and thank you for pointing this out...I just found this clam to be beautiful and perfect for a photo.

Kristine,

Design and color is one of the things that I am always focused on.  We take these lessons from Nature and apply them to our clients' brands and all their collateral materials.  It is important to bring their marketplace into their image, so yes, I spend time in each client's marketplace taking picture of what some may consider silly, such as rocks, carvings, grasses, ets.  Those are the things that make it all unique.

Roy,

Thank you we love doing it.

John,

You know me well, I made sure that the flying predators would not readily find this creature...Threw some wet sand on top and placed him just right so that he could bury himself with the next wave...LOL A

Looks happy to me Ron and Alexandra!  Can you see that wry smile eeking out on the shady side?  Maybe it knows something we don't.

AHA!!! no answer as the Clam is Clammed Up! However...judging from the setting, and the way this beauty fits into the environment comfortably( would that eventually we all will do the same), I venture to guess that the resident in this wee abode is happy.

Being a clam can be a daunting job especially since they have no legs to run away. I hope he's a happy clam-I hate to think of him not being happy in that fabulous spot.

Beautiful shading of this clam Alexandra against the grainy sand...yes I think I see a slight smile at the corner of his shell!

Awesome photo!  I love clams...steamed and fried!  Happy to know that this guy was allowed to live and remain "happy" though!

Here is something I found online regarding the expression:

Why would clams be happy? It has been suggested that open clams give the appearance of smiling. The derivation is more likely to come from the fuller version of the phrase, now rarely heard - 'as happy as a clam at high water'. Hide tide is when clams are free from the attentions of predators; surely the happiest of times in the bivalve mollusc world.

Hi Alexandra, That is a pretty cool photo but I have no idea what makes a clam happy. But if run into one I am going to ask. LMAO

Alexandra,

I'm wondering where that saying comes from.  It doesn't really make a lot of sense when you think about it.  Do they even have a brain?

Well now I see Sharon's insight.  Thanks to Sharon and thanks to you for sharing!

Gordon,

Sharon Tara has been good enough to research that one.

janeAnne,

I think so too, and I think I made him happier by moving him to water's edge.

Toni,

I am certain he is exactly where he wants to be.

Larry and Sheila,

The smile was for the photographer, LOL.

Sharon,

Thanks so much for researching that.  I had thought of doing it, and then a hundred things to do, took me in another direction.

William,

I would like to hear the answer. LOL

DeeDee,

No, I don;t think they have a brain, and Sharon added to this post with her research.

All the best, A

Hi Alexandra, I am sure he will stay happy as long as no one pries him out of his house and I am sure he doesn't want to end Up on a platter for dinner.
