Let Go and Join the Younger Generation, HomeFinder.com Makeover -Many know that I have been in the real estate business for almost 32 years. When I started mostly as a part-time agent, I really never had a true goal of where I wanted my real estate career to take me.
Because of my personality as a high achiever, I threw myself into the business and it quickly became a way of life. I changed, reluctantly at times, when new systems and technology came on the scene and forced me into it. Some things I adapted to well and others were a real struggle for me.
Using a PC was one of the biggest struggles I had. Software programs were being pitched to agents so fast that it would make your head swim. I went on board with many of them and never maximized their true potential and benefits. I plotted along and learned key strokes and shortcuts by looking over the shoulder of friends, family and colleagues. When a computer problem arose and the technician was called in to work on my PC, I watched and asked questions and learned some secrets of the trade to help me conquer some of the mysteries of my personal computer. While I can now make my around pretty well in the PC computer world, I feel like I am being left behind because of the younger generation.
Now to the future and what I need to do to accomplish the Let Go and Join the Younger Generation, HomeFinder.com Makeover. It is time to proceed into the world of Macintosh. I have been watching the professionals, the college age students and the young graduates that are entering their careers. I have asked them what computers they are using and why. Most often, they are using a Mac. I dug a little deeper to find what they like about it and what they don’t like about it. Not a single one was sorry they had chosen a Mac. Not one thought they had jumped too fast and made a poor choice. Every single one thought they had the best computer for them with the exception that a few wanted to upgrade to the newer, finer version with the retina display.
What I have found is that the Mac is well ahead of the technology of any PC according to current Mac users. I learned that a Mac can do everything I am doing with my PC but not only better but with more ease and less chance for error. The fact that an anti-virus software is not needed really interests me too since even though my PC currently has a good anti-virus program on it, I have had to make 2 trips this year to the technician to get my computer cleaned and disinfected. The Mac screens had clarity and then the best part is next. Mac’s have an extended life over a PC. I have been told that some of the users are using the same Mac for over 7 years and although they upgraded parts, the system is running great and they are happy. I have been told too that I shouldn’t be surprised if it lasted 10 years where most PC’s have a life expectancy of 2-4 years. Now that sounds like I might actually be saving money in the long run.
Now the challenge to all this is to get my head around making the change. Then it is to learn in baby steps how to use the operating system on the new Mac. Next would be to add software programs that I need or use and hope I don’t lose any data in the process. Then the final step is to Let Go and Join the Younger Generation, HomeFinder.com Makeover by letting go of my old PC and its older ways of doing things.
My presentations will be sharper, my documents more orderly, my photos and videos will be edited with ease, my calendar will be integrated with my other Apple devices and through iCloud, I will have the security that nothing is going to be lost or corrupted with a virus again. And when I have my other Apple devices on the same wireless network, I can share my photos, videos and documents with the touch of a finger. It sounds so easy but the hard part is this old mind of mine has to grasp it all. Maybe I can find a 5 or 6 year old that can teach me some of the tricks of what I need to know.
Let Go and Join the Younger Generation, HomeFinder.com Makeover will be a huge step for me into the future to stay up to date with my client files and social media. If the young people do it with such ease, if it is their computer of choice, then this old Realtor can catch on too. I don’t want to be left behind.
