Sailing Aficionados Call Me "Deck Parsley" – I Can Live With That.

Real Estate Broker/Owner with North Shore Suburbs & Chicago Real Estate

Sailor GirlI’ve always heard that the two happiest days in a boat owner’s life are the day he buys the boat and the day he sells it.  I’ve also heard that it is much simpler to know someone who owns a boat than to own one yourself.  Over the years, I've known several people who have graciously shared the joys of boating somewhere between the first and last days of their ownership.  Invited for a few, fun-filled hours out on the open waters, there’s usually plenty of good food, adult beverages, and someone else to navigate the boat.  No manual labor required.

Yes, I like sailing if it means I can have a drink in one hand
and a plate of cocktail weenies in the other.  For some reason, I’ve been asked if I like to sail three times in the past week.  All I can say is:  Please refer to Paragraph #1.  I know how to be a guest on a boat.  I don’t know how to start it, stop it, or steer it.  I don't know how to put gas into it.  For the lack of a better phrase, I’m “Nautically Challenged.”  That being said, I do know that light winds are good.  Capsizing is bad.
All hands on deck … NOT!  Several years ago, I joined a few, seasoned sailing buddies on a boating excursion.  Much of the time, I spent ducking under masts and losing stuff overboard.  But mostly, I was urged to just get out of the way!  While on the ferry boat heading back to shore, I recounted my story to anyone who would listen.  A gentleman I did not know said to me:  “Oh, you’re what we call “Deck Parsley.”  My puzzled expression prompted him to further explain:  “Basically, you look good sitting up on deck – but you don’t serve much purpose.”

Hey, I happen to think "Deck Parsley" has a nice ring to it!  And besides, we all can’t be good at everything, right?

Carrie - my father in law used to say it a little different

The happiest day to own a boat is the day you put it in the water and it stays afloat (he used to build his own) after that it is just a hole in the water surrounded by wood into which one continuously throws money.

That's a great story!  I learned to sail as a teenager in California and had lots of adventures ... even capsizing multiple times while learning LOL!  One evening I was out with my dad, and we discovered something HUGE was following us -- a whale!  Scared the life out of us both as we'd have been swallowed up along with our 18-ft sailboat!!  Growing up next to the ocean, though, I felt lucky to have an appreciation of the water -- along with a healthy respect for its dangers.

That's a great name Carrie.   Unfortunately I don't do boats very well.   On a lake is ok but get me out into open water and I get sick.   I prefer to stay on shore and take pictures of them like I did last weekend.  Sail Boats on San Francisco Bay

Hi Carie,

Fun post.

Our area - Puget Sound - is called the boating capital of the world!

Lots of sailers and power boaters. One of our biggest annual celebrations is called SeaFair, and boaters of all ilks come out!

I think that deck parsley might just be another name for seaweed.  I agree with the statement about the two best days for a boater.  I've had a few boats in the past that I enjoyed but it was expensive and a lot of work. Nice post.

Carie, leave the navigating to the captain of the boat. Boats are like pools most people will not have a second one. Deck Parsley works for me.

HAving had a boat for 18 years (and selling it almost a decade ago), I had never heard the term deck parsely.  I like it.  Boats can be terrible investments, but that is not what boats are built for.  They ar built for fun.  Stay dry!

Wayne & Jean:  I thought it was a compliment too ... sort of :)

Lea:  "Go Green" ... I like it :)

Tammy:  Yes, parsley does have it's positive sides too :)

Amanda:  Cove cruises sound cool!  And yes, taking care of a boat is always the other element of the story :)

Steve:  Thanks!  Many lessons learned while sailing ... so true!  And, I really like your quotes ... both of them :)

My most favorite vacations I have had with my husband were bareboat chartering the the Carribbean.  But I have never heard the term "deck parsley."  Will remember it.  I think, however, that the thing you were ducking under was the boom, not the mast, as the mast is that vertical thingy that extends from the boat toward the sky.  Made me laugh and definitely made your point!

Katharine:  You're welcome!  And, thank you for sharing the story about your "deck parsley friends" ... love it :)

Melissa:  Being deck parsley is healthier ... and safer :)

Hella:  And you navigated the boat at night in complete darkness.  Wow ... congrats!  Sounds like you enjoyed the experience, too :)

Janis:  A boat with a captain and a motor sounds perfect to me too!  If I ever get an invitation for a ride out your way, you're invited too :)

Margaret:  Yes, in this case, it's easy being green!

Sharon:  You're right!  Being out on Lake Michigan is awesome yet sometimes, you just can't wait to get back to shore!  It was so great meeting you at the Meetup as well :)

Katerina:  What a great story ... although it sounds like it didn't feel too great at the time.  Hey, I'm right there with you.  As long as we're moving through calm waters, I'm okay.  Otherwise ... not so much :)

Amy:  You just never know how much work is involved, yes?  It was so great meeting you the other day too!

Kathy:  Your father-in-law's saying is funny ... and it's correct too :)

Maureen:  OMG ... what an awesome story!  And, what an experience to share with your Dad.  You're right ... the water is to be appreciated and enjoyed -- and also respected for it dangers, as well!

Jim:  Yes, I hear you about being out in the open waters!  And, you seem to do quite well from shore ... fabulous photo!  Thanks for sharing it :)

Phil:  Wow, didn't know that about Puget Sound.  And, that annual SeaFair Celebration sounds like it is one heck of a party!

Doug:  That's what I've always heard.  And, as you said, once you live through it you can attest to it :)

Michael:  Have fun!  I think being deck parsley is equal opportunity :)

Michael:  I've never heard that comparison between owning a boat and a pool before :)  Yes, I think you're absolutely right!

Gary:  You're right!  Boats are for fun and most people don't realize how much time and money is involved too :)

Kathryn:  Your comment made me chuckle!  See ... I wasn't kidding when I said I knew very little about boats.  Thanks for straightening me out :)

Hi Carie, great post. I don't do boats... at all.. not even for a good, really good red wine (for which I usually do anything). Not only are  you in the middle of really deep water, but you are there with really scary things below, and in a puny piece of wood or fiberglass. No thanks... not even "deck parsley" in my case. Just call me "parsley."

Mike:  'Stand there and look pretty' ... that works too.  I like it!  Great seeing you at the Meetup and looking forward to the next one!

Sandy:  Thanks!  Ok, Parsley.  How about if the boat doesn't leave the dock and there is a really good red wine on board? :)
