When you're done with being a gas station, what better thing to do than convert the station to a restaurant?  That's what Andy's Garage did and had a thriving business since opening in 2000.  This is the St. Paul location at Fairview and University Ave. W.  Well, this WAS the St. Paul location.  As you can see, Andy closed her/his/their St. Paul location with no attempt to sell the restaurant business.  The restaurant just up and closed the doors.  Why?  He's (Dee, one of the owners) having knee surgery and it was too much to handle along with the new Minneapolis location that opened this year.  Ultimately, it's because they could!

Andy's, however, was becoming a landmark in the Midway area.  The original gas station bathroom was still there with it's single stall and alan wrench handles on the old sink.  The cashier was where the cash register would have been back in the day.  There were old signs for car repair and for local businesses.  Both service bays were equipped with retro tables and chairs ala soda fountain days.  The kitchen was tucked in where the employee lounge might have been.  There was a juke box!  I never drove by when the parking lot was empty even in the winter.  A small stage accommodated "Doo Wop" live bands.  The veranda allowed for outside seating at plastic tables and where you could bring your dog if he was well mannered.  The waitresses wore blue jeans and t-shirts.  It truly felt like re-entering a 1950's gas station, except the grease smell was of French fries instead of car grease.  The only other difference?  The floors were painted and sparkling clean.

Andy's happened to be one block from my office so we lunched there often.  The fries were better than the fast food joints and the hamburgers came true California style.  Desserts were straight from the soda fountain.  One could still order a cherry pineapple malt and it came in the metal can with a tulip glass to drink from!  It was truly a step back in time.

The property is for sale and is in a prime location with the Department of Education retrofitting a huge warehouse across the street and the light rail slated for 2011 on the University street frontage.  The business, however, is closed.  We will miss this little piece of St. Paul as it just disappears into the night.

That place looks awesome.  Another classic falls by the wayside.  We made up our mind to eat at non-franchise restaurants in our town years ago, just for this reason.

St. Paul would be the place for you then, because we have lots of non-franchise restaurants and coffee shops.  It's a fun place to explore.  One client told me she and a friend spent 3 years dining out with the commitment not to repeat where they ate until they thought they had covered everything! I don't know how many times a week they ate out, but that's a long time not to repeat eating at one place.  BE

Sounds like a great place. How long did it operate as a restaurant?

Maureen, it actually has only been there 6 years, but it felt like it had been there forever.  The one with the really long history is Porky's which is across the street.  Porky's is a hang out for the antique car show crowd.  They park in the drive-in and watch the old cars cruise down University (cruising happens every Friday night in the summer).  BE

What a great review and how sad when a place like this disappears; it's like part of the fabric of the neighborhood gets torn. And ok ya got me, what is a California Style hamburger? It has sushi instead of ground meat ? :-)

Carole, A California style hamburger has lettuce and tomato on it usually accompanied by mayonnaise, but I hold the mayo.  BE

I'm a native Californian, and of course, that is the way a hamburger is supposed to be prepared.  You mean they don't do it like that in the rest of this great country??!!  Oh. My. Gosh.   :-)

Cheryl, I thought California style hamburger was a universal across the nation so either Carole has led a sheltered life, is a vegetarian, or Cleveland is out of the loop!  ;-D

Wow!  I had no idea.  Guess I've been away from Active Rain too long.  I know Dee Traudt the owner from his days at Bethel College now University.

I wonder if they just relocated it to the Minneapolis location or shut the whole thing down.  They sure did have some great brugers and fires.

Maybe we'll have to go to Phoenix and meet Jay Thompson at the Heart Attack Cafe for a good burger.

Donna,  I believe it looks like Andy's in St. Paul shut down in favor of their new Minneapolis location.  Check out the website link.  It's a shame they didn't keep it open with the light rail going through and the new education building next door.  Bethel, huh?  I didn't know about that connection.  Did you attend there as well?

Bonnie, I always find it disheartening when a restaurant I'm fond of goes out of business and it's happened more often than I'd like to remember!  There are a few that my family and I still talk about many years after they closed down.
