Cemeteries and Parking Lots ~ One REALTOR'S Perspective

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with MoonDancer Realty, Dillsboro,NC NC# 218097

Don’t you think your perspective changes warps about the location of certain things when you are in real estate, for example - the locations of cemeteries and parking lots? The oddest things occur to me now and maybe it’s because I’m in the mountains and build-able property is at a premium.

Sometimes I walk down my driveway or look out my window and think, thank goodness back when Congress was working more for the people that the Blue Ridge Parkway Service property was preserved. That would be my logical brain talking, the REALTOR brain says…the grade on that property is perfect for subdividing.

Cemeteries are always in prime real estate locations, the nicest laying property commanding the best views. The Tuckasegee River runs along side of US74 here and occasionally there are mini-storage buildings, lumber yards or singlewide parks…and my REALTOR brain calculates whether or not those uses are the highest and best use for the property. Not that it matters, it’s really just a brain game since those people were there first.

When I drove into Waynesville yesterday to preview a listing for a buyer, I also stopped at Ingle’s Grocery Store in Waynesville. A massive thunderstorm was coming in through the Pisgah Mountains and I shot this photo from the grocery store parking lot! For those of you who are curious…the buildings in the foreground would be our version of “Fast Food Row” or Russ Avenue. In the distance, the large square building and the two church spires are markers for the historic Downtown Waynesville.

Leslie and I try to tell new clients who are determined to buy a house with a great view but are sometimes dismayed by either the price or the access, don't worry!  Find the house you love and realize that you can't drive to the grocery store without being surrounded by astounding views.

I have to admit, I’m glad the Ingle's parking lot has this view. This way, regular citizens doing regular things have a consistent reminder about the incredible area we live in. My REALTOR brain doesn’t dominate all the time and when it does…when I start thinking some properties would be better off developed and sold? Then, it’s time to get out of real estate before I become too mercenary. I hope forever I thoroughly appreciate the views from the cemeteries and parking lots, they’re there for us to share with each other.

Roger, I bow to your lyrical prowess !

Michael, all year round, an incredible view.

Gay, that's better...I really wouldn't want to consider myself mercenary.

Valerie, I hope your test farm stays just as it is...in the long run it will benefit the community far more than more houses and condos!

I agree with you....beautiful. And it's funny how I notice these cemetaries now, there are many people who won't live by one.

Nothing wrong with a parking lot with a view.  Cemeteries could be great neighbors.  They never throw loud parties.

Sort of on the same subject, but when you drive down a highway you haven't been on for awhile, and you see all that new construction--whole subdivisions, shopping malls, etc.--it's a little frightening to me. In California, so much good agricultural land was lost during the housing boom.

That parking lot has been there a long, long time.  When I used to come up here to vacation I would often go up there and get supplies.  Always enjoyed the view and the almost constant breeze.  I thought if this is what the grocery parking lot is like,  I know I want to live here.

I used to work at a cemetery so living next to one wouldn't bother me.  The cemetery I worked at was like an 80 acre park, a peaceful place for walking, bicycle riding, and watching the birds and squirrels.  Usually cemeteries have been there for generations and were originally built just outside of town.  After years of growth the town often surrounds the cemetery.

There are many grocery stores at which I can shop, but I choose to go to a particular one that has prime views of Lake Michigan.  Grocery shopping is such a chore, but when I come out of the store and see the lovely lake views, I am glad it was built there!

Mona, this sounds terrible but I never noticed that you work in Waynesville. My was actually in the historic downtown several years ago. Even contemplated a move there but found Franklin TN to be a better fit for us. It is a beautiful area. Small world.

Karen, I'm sure they are especially poignant for you.  I appreciate your comment.

Chris and Dick, they are wonderful neighbors and you can be sure they'll never turn into condos.

Roger, you and me both.

Hella, people with horses talk about pasture land disappearing.

Leslie, I didn't know that!

Iris, that makes sense.

Margaret, that's a great choice to have.

Tammie, that is interesting. You should stop in next time you visit.

Mona - "Realtor Brain".  It's not my Realtor Brain that's so bad, it's the lawyer brain I gained my first year of law school that really changed the way I looked at everything.

Tammy, it is a lovely drive in your area.

Christine, I don't think I could live with a lawyer brain...it would definitely color everything different.  At least Realtor brain can be tuned out.

Gary, I think everyone should be able to find something beautiful about the place they call home.

Highest and best use does indeed sometimes mean... leave it undeveloped. We need the visual relief, let alone the ability of the land to soak up water and give back clean air. Parks, agricultural areas... we need them all. Thanks for the beautiful photo and glimpse into your corner of the world.
