Reminder: Streets of San Francisco --- can be dangerous for pedestrians
Love San Francisco. Extremely fabulous walk-ability. Lots of things to see and do. But people shouldn’t be so bold or so distracted as to literally risk their lives by jaywalking.
Time and time again, news stories are about pedestrians getting killed, on a cross walk, and by bicyclists!
Early this morning, I watched a story about jaywalkers crossing one of the most dangerous intersections in San Francisco. But what was so disturbing is that people were crossing with headphones on, walking very slowly, completely oblivious to traffic and that they may be within seconds of death --- theirs.
Pedestrian injuries can be costly: 15 million per year in medical treatment alone and comprise a quarter of all traumatic injuries.
Maybe if pedestrians are ticketed, a hole in their pocket may dissuade them from jaywalking. Or at least, make them more observant.
Be careful out there!

Pacita - It's dangerous enough crossing in a cross walk, you really need to be aware of what is going on around you at all times. Pedestrians never win when it comes down to a car, or bike hitting them. Great post!
Hi Pacita... I must confess I jay walk alot.... it's the New Yorker in me. But, thanks for the post and I'll try to be more careful :)
Laura -- I too, jaywalk....but I am extremely careful, I look both ways, wait for traffic to clear, and don't have on headphones
Peggy -- and I'm Manila megalopolis bred city girl. It's so critically important to be very cautious and alert if one must do this.
Pacita, last year we had a vacation in Germany and my husband was crossing pedestrian cross walk on red light when no cars were around ( me and my daughter stopped waiting for green). He was not interfering with any traffic on the empty street but still got stopped by police and received a warning. I think that if he wouldn't show his US passport he would have to pay fine ;-) I think all big cities have the same problem and most accidents involving pedestrians are pedesptian's fault because they are so careless.
Anna --- when traveling abroad and we don't know the rules, it helps to err on the side of caution. However, when we were in Italy, our guide said to never look at the driver, and just cross. It's like a battle of the wills. Wow! Talk about deadly!
I try to remember were i had most trouble to cross the road..probably: Italy.
lol, i don't know think those ppl have any rules or regulations.
