Moving to Richmond? Tips to Make Your Richmond Move Hassle-Free Part 2

theNeatNiche Professional Organizer

This is the second article in a 3 part series brought to you by Home Sweet Henrico and theNeatNiche Professional Organizing on tips to make your Richmond Relocation move hassle free:

Move Day: Keep It Together!

The day of your move doesn’t have to be all hassle and stress. Keep it together with these useful tips.

1.Before the Movers Arrive

Even if you think you’ve packed everything, go through your house to open every single door and drawer. Houses are full of nooks and crannies that are easily missed, and you may find belongings hiding in corners or rarely used cabinets. Don’t forget to check inside appliances too – in the hustle and bustle of packing, it’s easy to forget the dishes in the dishwasher or clothes in the dryer. Do a quick exterior walk-through as well, checking your garage, yard, and shed.

2. Know Your Stuff

Note the condition of furniture and appliances before the movers get ahold of them. Use digital or even camera phone pictures to document scratches and dings just in case you need to prove the original condition.

3. Verify Your Movers

It’s a nightmare come true: movers show up, load up your stuff, and head out – except those movers were actually scammers who have just stolen all your possessions! Double-check the USDOT number painted on the side of the moving truck against the number on the estimate you were given.

4. Don’t End Up with a Screw Loose

If your movers are disassembling your furniture, put all hardware in a sealable plastic bag, and keep it with you. You’ll want the legs back on the kitchen table after you move!

5. Keep Important Items with You

It’s always a good idea to keep valuables and important papers (birth certificates, job contacts, utility company phone numbers, your Richmond Realtor information, etc.) with you. Make use of your Move Binder! (Refer back to article 1 in the series) If you only have room for your binder in your car, hide valuables in the moving truck with an innocuous label that only means something to you (i.e. “Kitchen Pantry” when you’re not really bringing anything from your pantry with you). Know your homeowner coverage and what you’ll need to provide in case you need to make a claim.

6. Keep It Bright

Once lamps are packed, rooms with few windows and no overhead lighting will be darker than you think, especially if you’re lucky enough to be moving on a rainy day. Keep a bright flashlight on hand.

7. Be a Good Former Homeowner

You probably don’t know the people moving into your old house, but give them a break: leave a folder of important information such as appliance warranties, local hot spots, and good resources for the area (stores and restaurants) for the new owners. You would be grateful if someone did the same for you.

You’ve covered all your bases…time to head out!

Will - I never thought about number 3 either, but thought Erin's (theNeatNiche) tip was fantastic to check the number. Something I would not have thought of!

Shannon: An excellent reminder to keep your eyes and ears open during that move. Definitely keep a flashlight handy. I travel with one all the time, even to listings or showing homes. There's always something hidden.
