Christmas Decorations in July?!

By

Pretty streamer waving in the breezeInspecting the exterior portion of a townhouse style condo recently, I noticed a few bright streamers attached to the corner of the building flapping in the early morning breeze. My first thought was, someone has left their Christmas decorations up a little long. As I walked around the exterior I noticed more of the same streamers attached to the building.

These bright and shiny streamers actually have a purpose. While they may appear to be a decoration, they have nothing to do with Christmas. They actually have a very specific purpose.

Can you guess what these streamers are doing?

Good morning James,

Wow..they don't look like Christmas decorations to me but are they used to determine the direction of the wind?

Hi James,

I have had these put on a home where the buyers wanted me to look at something specific. I don't think it's the case with you. People do strange things. but like Richard said, It's probably to keep the birds at bay.

Have a great day in Conneticutt.

Wow, everyone knows the answer to that.  Those release the static charges from the neighborhood so when people walk or drive there the hair on their heads does not stand up.

C'mon!  Ask a hard question!

The other day I had a house completely decorated for Christmas - house, trees, bushes and even a reindeer in the front yard!

Certainly not static discharge that one.

Charlie may be on to something.  On wood sided houses here the people put rat traps filled with suet to attract and do in the woodpeckers that are so damaging here.

Charlie is thinking that is a scarepecker.

They were put there to distract the Home Inspector so he wouldn't see the rotted siding. :-)

A few of you were on the right track with to scare away birds. Specifically woodpeckers.

@ Jay, Suet filled rat traps! In my opinion not cool. Woodpeckers are a protected species.

Next time I see one I will take a photo and send it to you!  There is a neighborhood in Reston VA full of special, artistic, wood-sided houses and the traps are everywhere!

So, those really were scarepeckers!
