How My "Oldie" Real Estate Clients Overcome Negative Stereotypes
SO! ...seems that society, consumer marketing and the media offer images that reinforce negative stereotypes of "Oldies".... who are portrayed to be...
bad drivers, set in their ways, repeat storytellers (like 40 times, ) absent-minded, full of mothballs, and live in houses cluttered with memorabilia ...and, if they aren’t already- they soon will be decrepit!
BALOGNA, I SAY! At least here in Asheville, a Top Retirement Town in the USA, that ridiculous notion is blown. TOTALLY! Here in Asheville, Old is Bold. In sheer numbers, Boomers have the power to create change with compassion.
I cringe when I run into media hype that says that you and I are, day-by-day on the path to getting decrepit, do you?
In fact, I believe such media hype negatively can impact our health beliefs and behaviors. But I also believe that the Silent and Boomer Generations are smart elders – the NOT-so-Retiring among us. – And we (I am including myself) are, in reality, and right here and now – changing aging perceptions! I see that in Asheville all the time. Example- The Center for Creative Retirement. Check it out.
I’m working for changing aging perceptions – my white hair does NOT mean that I am "defunct" or on my way to being so- NO WAY! I'm ready to confront and re-write the negative script aroound aging— especially when it comes to "aging-in-place"- re-writing that term to Aging-in-PALACE© (look for my eBook on this for your "Oldies") - And I am working to show that attitudes, expectations and actions drive outcomes - not simply the passage of time. Of special interest to my real estate clients...
