I suspect folks in other parts of the country will likely get a kick out of Californians getting wide-eyed during a thunder and lightening storm. After all these events often happen on a regular basis, elsewhere. But, Sacramento natives aren’t as familiar with this kind of activity in mid-summer July.
Last night I went to bed around 10:00 pm and was abruptly awakened about 2:00 am with what I thought was an explosion in front of my house, the sound immediately followed with a telltale flash from the lightening that followed. This storm was a little wilder than I am comfortable with. And my dog and cat, that often won’t share their bed on hot summer nights, made quick friends with each other out on the back step to comfort each other.
When fear surrounds us, we learn to be much more tolerant of others for sure.
William Feela (#6) Hit the nail on the head with his comment! I laughed at the kitty's ears. Not looking TOO thrilled about it, still.... :)))
Myrl ... thunder - and flashes and it seems they all run for the "under-the-bed" land of safety .... and I'm left on my own to figure it out! Alas, after the Fourth they were starting to calm down ...
William - So true! I've endured a few storms in my life where I quickly was able to find out who my "fair-weather" friends were from my real friends:-)
Joni - Sybil the cat wasn't really happy about it was right! They usually sleep together in that same spot on cold winter nights, but never in mid-summer!
Jack - I'm fortunate in a crazy way because my dog is deaf. He doesn't hear loud noises. However, lightening can spook him a little! The cat reacts to temperature change, which is why she found her way among the dogs legs to stay warm:-)
It's like the big dog and cat in an old looney tunes cartoon getting together in harmony or something. :)
That was a thunderous night Myrl, it reminded me of the weather back east.
Meryl,
I am still sore from being leaped upon last night by 2 frightened doggies after thunder rumble #2 :-)
Myrl,
What a great story about your pets! Wouldn't it be funny if you woke up to find both of them curled up next to you!
I love this story. I remember being frightened of thunder and lightening when I was very young. Pets are like people, aren't they! Everyone needs to cuddle up next to someone!
Myrl~
I had to smile out loud as I read your post today. Crackling nature. ...it can bring us together...maybe even elicit change with compassion...as your photo brings to mind. My wee Papillon, who is 90% deaf now at age almost 16, was never fearful of thunder until he felt it in his feet in a new way... Now he quakes....looks at me with an increased perception of the perils he has not induced.
Cute picture. We have a severe thunderstorm watch in Gaithersburg this afternoon. I hope Dolores finishes her golf game before the storm.
Myrl I can assure you our Golden would not sleep during a thunderstorm - there would be whining and whimpering. Our cats would hide under our bed
Cute story... we've had a few good thunder storms here this last week. Hey, when you're scared, you don't want to be alone. What a priceless picture.
Myrl, cute photo. The cat looks like one I had years ago. I had two dalmatians that normally were very independent until the storms hit then they couldn't get close enough to eachother and me!
Myrl, That must have been quite a fright, lightning that sounded like explosion! But, it's so nice to see how your pets decided to huddle together to comfort each other through the storm. Great shot!
Curling up with a friend when something scary happens is always a great thing to do, Myrl. I posted some pirates for you to see. I happen to like your cute little pirate better :)
We've had some spectacular lightning/thunder storms around here in St George lately. Monsoon season sometimes brings them. Cute pets all curled up together....bet they're glad they have each other on nights like those!
Such a cute story of your pets Myrl & a great photo. I live in the midwest & always awakened by my German Shepherd who is terrified of storms. She lets me know a storm is coming before I ever hear it.
