Flying a flag half-staff is such a heart-felt/sincere gesture to honor those who we are remembering. It gives me pause for taking some time to think and express my gratitude for the many blessings we enjoy here in this great country. I'm proud to be an American and I love to see our flag!
Such a tragic event - flying the flag at half-staff is the right thing to do. I'm like Shanna - proud to me an American!
Cheryl, It is a way of showing respect and a remembrance to those that were in the right place at the wrong time. Such an innocent place to be that turned into a nightmare.
I think it is a lovely tradition and it reminds those who see it of the people who have been lost.
Our nephew was killed in Afghanistan recently. The Governor of Maryland, where he lived, ordered that the flag fly at half staff on the day he was buried in Arlington. My husband said it was powerful honor and gesture for the entire family.
This week, our hearts and prayers are with the people of Aurora, Colorado - especially those touched by the tragedy.
I always thought flying the flag at half staff was an honor and a privalege reserved for our Military Soldiers killed in action and those that serve in the Police and Fire Departments.
I am saddened by the loss of lives in CO. They deserve respect. My prayers are with their families.
I am sad to hear about Debb's story. How sad it is to know that her nephew was killed in Afghanistan. The Governor of Maryland did the right thing by ordering the flag. My heart and prayers are with our dear friend Debb Janes and her family at this especially difficult time in their life.
Shanna you know as we get older we sort of have more appreciation of our customs and tend to become more compassionate. Thanks for your comment and visiting.
Hi John. Your right about that! When you lived in other countries you feel it even more.
Hi Debbie. For the President to even consider lowering the flag speaks volumes.
Oh Debb...my condolences...a very close friend of mines son died also during Afghanistan 2 years ago (he was 26 years old). He lived in Arizona and earlier this month he was honored at the Arizona Diamondback's MLB game at Chase Field.
Patricia I use to think that way while I was on active duty, however, since I have retired from the service I have see things a bit differently. Our flag can be honored more than one way.
Cheryl

Hi there Lou. Yes sir, I would definitely agree...it makes my heart heavy though..why couldn't he just take himself out, if he felt life was not worth living for?
