Firefly in a Jar. Have We Lost Our Minds?

Firefly in a Jar. Have We Lost Our Minds?  Do you remember as a young child going out in the backyard to catch fireflies in a jar? We called them lightning bugs Firefly in a Jar. Have we lost our minds?in Tennessee because they flashed like lightning.

It was great fun to wait for dusk to set in and either get a canning jar, an old mayonnaise or peanut butter jar and see how many of these little flying insects you could catch. It was a competition of sorts to see who could get the most Fireflies in a Jar.

Then some nights we would take a wiffle bat and see how many we could hit. They would sail through the air with their tails lit up, kind of like a shooting star. This sounds a little cruel but all the kids in the neighborhood did it and the lightning bugs were plentiful back then.

Now when my children were growing up I do not remember them doing this activity. If fact, I don’t remember there being very many fireflies at all. And today, I almost never see a firefly outside at all. Did we make them extinct by catching too many of them in our jars and giving them a smack with the bats?

They have been brought back by modern enterprise. Yes, you can buy a fake set of Fireflies in a Jar. Have we lost our minds? I think so. For $14.95 you can purchase a jar with a little fake insect at your nearby home improvement store.

Is it not enough to pass down the stories from our childhoods to our children and Fireflies in a Jargrandchildren and let them use their imaginations about how it was way back then? Now Carolyn Bock McBride has written a book, Fireflies in a Jar: Growing Up in Austin 1938-1956. I really like this idea that we could read a story to our children and grandchildren about those fun times.

If this blows your mind like it does mine that you can purchase a fake insect and pay that much for it, then good for you. We have to draw the line somewhere. Now for the news that is even more incredible. The Firefly in a Jar sold out at my local store in record time. Have we lost our minds?

But if you simply must have your own set, I think you can order them online but I think the cost is as high as $28.49. I don’t know about you, but I work too hard for my money to spend it that way.

Debbie,

I remember catching lightening bugs too.  Growing up in Arkansas we did the same thing.  And I do think we live in a world gone mad.  Thanks for the walk down memory lane.  Have a great weekend.

We caught fireflys in a jar but we always punched holes in the lid and released them after the adventure was over. I don't know why they are becoming less plentiful.  Probably because we are blithly destroying our planet with pesticides, air polution, water polution and more.  All while denying what were doing so "job creators" can do as they please in the name of greed.

We call them lightening bugs here in GA also. Some of my best childhood memories include me and my cousins at my grandmother's house catching them and putting them in a mason jar. We still see a few here and there but not like when I was a kid.

As for fake ones.....seems weird to me. I agree I would like to be able to share these stories with my grandchildren one day.

Thanks for posting and reminding me of the good times.

Pretty smart idea, enough so, that the idea is written about. I suppose if you people will buy pet rocks, why not fire fly in a bottle?

Melissa, Maybe the south had more lightning bugs. I'm glad it brought back fond memories for you too.

Leslie, Our environment may well be the cause of the elimination of this creature. I just haven't seen many of these in years and wondered where they went.

Margaret, I remember that the little bugs kind of stunk but don't think they pulled their lights off. That does sound cruel.

Diana, You are from the south and we must have all done the same type things. I don't like the fake version though.

Joe, Someone had an idea to make some money and it evidently caught on. It never would have occured to me to invent or replicate this type of thing. Maybe I need to expand my thinking. Have a great weekend.

Debbie~ I love fireflies.  We don't have any in Colorado.  I think you only see them in humid climates.  I would never buy fake ones in a jar, but I'd like to get that book.

Barbara-Jo, I guess you can get just about anything you can think of online or through Craigslist. It is truly amazing.

Donna, I never thought about them liking a humid climate. With the humidity we have had lately, they should be out in droves. Maybe it's too hot for them with temps over 100 degrees.

OMG no way. I hate this idea. I loved catching fireflies as a kid and I wish my daughter could do the same, but I wouldn't buy the fake ones in a jar. It's not the same as catching the same dumb bugs and keeping them in a jar.
