American Idol! Live

This was a pretty good year for "American Idol," if you like your "Idol" with actual talent. Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez were the most impressive vocalists, while Phillip Phillips charmed his way to victory with a good voice and a better smile. They're joined by Hollie Cavanagh, Skylar Laine, Colton Dixon, DeAndre Brackensick, Elise Testone, Erika Van Pelt and Heejun Han. Hopefully, Heejun offers some comic relief.

Details: 7 p.m. Friday, July 27. Jobing.com Arena, Loop 101 and Glendale Avenue, Glendale. $29.50-$65. 623-772-3200, ticketmaster.com.

Paul Rodriguez

With his ethnic-based humor, the trailblazing comedian helped pave the way for the likes of George Lopez and Carlos Mencia. Rodriguez created the successful Latin Kings of Comedy tour (which, coincidentally, featured Lopez in its initial go-round) and is highly respected for his philanthropic work. Perhaps most importantly, he's just plain funny, with standup skills he's been honing since the late 1970s.

Details: 8 p.m. Friday, July 27. Talking Stick Resort, 9800 E. Indian Bend Road, Salt River Reservation. $35-$85. 480-850-7734, ticketmaster.com.

Sponsored by the Prescott Regulators and Their Shady Ladies, the event raises money for charities. Arizona's official historian, Marshall Trimble, will speak at 5 p.m. Saturday. The event is free.
