A Bit of Friday Humor

By
Industry Observer with Retired

The premise for this post is about those of us that are old enough to remember a time when we didn't have computers. Along with the advent of computers came a whole new language. At least in part the language was really not new, just that the words we were familiar with were assigned new meanings.

For Example

When someone spoke of Memory, they were usually referring to someone getting old and losing it

The only Applications people knew about were for employment.

Programs spoken about were referring to a TV show

If you were a Curser, watch out for a bar of soap coming your way

If you had a Keyboard someone in the house played the piano

A Monitor was a person that sat in the hallway at school

A Web indicated that the house was not clean or that you had spiders

Look out for the Virus, if someone had it , everyone around them would get sick too

You were considered well off if you has a CD

A Hard drive is what you heard about from visiting relatives that lived out of state

A Mouse Pad was when the rodents had moved in as in, Mi Casa, Su Casa

And for sure, If anyone had a 3 1/2 inch floppy, they just hoped no one would ever find out

Happy Friday !

Hi Jon, Me too! And we can well document clearly that when we had to look up something , it was usually in an encyclopedia or a dictionary.

Good morning William. I really enjoyed this because it reflects a time I miss. Oh the tools we have and oh the things we have lost.

William,

What a clever and delightful post.  The face of research has changed.  When I was working on my Masters' degree, I remember sitting in the Library in my special section and pulling out books and making notes for papers, etc.  That concept has changed so much today, I can do all the research I want on line...yes, it is all changing and on a daily basis. A

Hi Sheila, One day it will just be a very distant memory. What is perhaps more interesting is what today's generation will be missing when they get to their advanced age of reflection.

Hi Alexandra, I would think that our next phase of advancement will be in voice-command and recognition. While there is still much to accomplpish with motion and touch, the combination with voice will take us to the next level. Identity of iris scan, fingerprint could untimeatly lead to specific or limited access to certain subjects. These are all being worked on and developed today for tomorrow. The future of technology is both stunning and a bit scary of what and who will be controlling it.

William- what is disconcerting to me is that I do remember when memory referred to whether or not you could remember things.  Oh well.....

Ain't it the truth!  I remember all those things too well!  By the way I have a couple of old 5 1/4" floppies.  I've been hiding them, knowing I should throw them out, but I'm nostalgic about them. . .LOL  We won't even count how many 3 1/2" floppies I have.  I actually have an external floppy reader. . .WhooHoo!  I was fairly good about transfering the data on most of my old floppies and storing on an external hard-drive.  I did go ahead and distroy hundreds of the old disks once the transferance was complete, but it was hard, really hard!  I'm from a generation if you can see data you wonder if it really exists.  Kind of like the tree that falls in the forest thing:-)

Hi Myrl, Im really sorry about that, but gravity can really take a toll on all of us. And keeping them hidden is the right idea, lest you go to France and just want to feel liberated, LMAO.

William, your post took me back to 1984 and my first computer and how excited I was to stare at a small 13" screen with a black field and orange type, ha! It was a Digital (the actual trade name) and it cost a small fortune.

The more I shuffle around the more I understand that gravity and the direction south, are not our friends:-)  Fortunately there is a positive side to living alone, and that's not needing to visit France to feel "liberated."  I just close the blinds at my house, and don't answer the door.  There are somethings that even The Golden Door can't remedy. . .They can "alleviate" but not entirely eliminate:-)

Hi Nancy, That was the year I got mine as well. And as I recall, it $3500 but it did include the monitor cable, LOL. Remember the monitor cable, for some reason they thought this was a precious item that they would use to negoitiate the price.
