Dark hardwood floors in Larchmont NY 10538

dark hardwood flooring ebony Larchmont NYIn Larchmont NY, dark hardwood floors are very stylish. Many of my customers love the dark look...they even ask for Ebony. Dark hardwood is sleek and stylish, and it gives your Larchmont home a sophisticated look.

How do you get dark hardwood flooring?

Most dark hardwoods are stained to make them darker. There are many species/types of wood that can achieve this look.

Ebony hardwood flooring Larchmont NY

1. The most common dark hardwood flooring is oak that is stained with a dark brown stain such as Ebony (the darkest stain) or a slightly lighter with a Jacobean or Dark Walnut stain. Many customers who are seeking a dark stain want "pure" brown with no hints of red. And, these 3 stains seem to achieve that goal well. The above 2 pictures are ebony.   Minwax stain samples - ebony, jacobean, dark walnut

Even if you have red oak flooring, these dark stains will drown out the inherent redness of the wood. If you already have oak floors, your floors can be stained dark (even if they are currently light colored). Or, if you are installing hardwood, you can either get a prefinished oak with a dark stain, or you can get unfinished hardwood and sand and stain it on the site. (One of the benefits to refinishing hardwood on site is that you can test samples of it on your own wood before committing to a color).

On the left is a picture of some of the minwax stain samples - Jacobean, ebony, red mahogany and dark walnut stains. It's important to test the colors on your actual wood as they often look different on different woods and in different homes. Also, looking at the Jacobean and Dark walnut on this chart, I can tell you that these actually tend to look much darker in real life on the real wood. So, always test.   Dark hardwood flooring royal mahogany Larchmont

Some customers want dark floors, but they also want a bit more warmth in the color, and in those cases, often Royal Mahogany is a good stain selection. It appears to be a combo of ebony and red mahogany.

Oak hardwood flooring tends to be less expensive vs other hardwood species as it's more abundant here in the US.

Brazilian walnut Larchmont NY

2. Brazilian Walnut is naturally a darker wood. In its natural state, I would call Brazilian Walnut a mid toned brown. Brazilian Walnut has a richer smoother grain vs. oak and it has a lot more color variation. You also have the option to add a stain to Brazilian Walnut to make it darker.

dark hickory hardwood floors Larchmont NY3. Hickory flooring is another hardwood that can easily be stained darker. Hickory is harder than oak (1800 on the Janka Scale vs. 1290 for red oak).

The above hardwoods (oak, brazilian walnut or hickory) are easy to install either as prefinished or unfinished hardwood and then stained on site to the desired color. The following hardwoods are generally best to get prefinished, especially for darker stain colors. (These woods are either rare/expensive to get in an unfinished form and/or are challenging to stain on site as they come out blotchy.

4. Maple hardwood flooring can be stained dark. Maple is a challenging hardwood to stain due to its pores; some of the dark stains come out gray and some come out darker brown. If you want a dark maple, I'd recommend buying a prefinished maple.

Shaw's Cosmopolitan maple is a unique black hardwood with a special type of enamel. It has a very sleek and modern look. But, it is a distressed hardwood, so it's not a flat surface like most hardwoods that you find in Westchester NY.

5. Some prefinished birches (left) and ashes (right) come very dark...even darker than maple.

American Walnut dark hardwood Larchmont NY6.  American Walnut is also naturally dark.  While this wood is very pretty, unlike Brazilian Walnut, American Walnut is rather soft and tends to dent rather easily.  It also tends to darken more from the light compared to oak.

Wenge dark hardwood flooring laminate

7. Wenge is a very dark hardwood and has its own unique look. It tends to be on the more expensive side. Unfortunately I don't have a picture of real Wenge hardwood, but the picture to the right is a laminate version of Wenge.

Wow, so many varieties Debbie.  Seems I always learn something new on your blog.  Do you see a trend going toward more of the darker hardwoods do you think.  I am seeing it in more homes these past few years than we have in years past.  GREAT POST!

Bobbie - Thx so much.  Yes, very dark is the most stylish and I have more and more customers doing this, especially in higher end homes.  Ironically, the 2nd most popular is the opposite side of the spectrum - natural (light).  It depends on the style of the home.  The extremes are most popular, but as I said, it depends on the home.  If it's an apartment w/ less light, natural is sometimes better.  And, in some homes, mid toned browns work the best.  But, regardless, browns (light, dark or mid) are in...and reds are much less popular.

Now i think dark hardwoods are a far better idea in kitchens where people choose dark cabinetry when there are not windows to lighten the room...do the light cabinets & the dark hardwoods...great stuff Deb

Ginny - Dark hardwood w/ white cabinets looks awesome...and white cabinets seem to be the most in style.  It's a perfect combo for the kitchen and whole home.

Dark wood seems to be more popular lately. Staining the floors is a great alternative for people wanting the dramatic colors. Many of our new construction home buyers are picking this out for their homes too. Some are planning to do it later on down the road. I believe doing it early on is better as once you move it is harder with the furniture in the room already. It is good to plan ahead!

Hi Deb,  I can say I'm definitely seeing more dark-stained wood floors in both high end new construction and also for homes that have been refurbished in preparation to going onto the market.

Another thing I've been seeing quite a lot lately is like the photo below.  They are using a dark stain over an existing wood floor as decoration.  It gives the look of an inlaid floor, but it is actually an applied stain in a decorative pattern.  I DO like it... but I have to ask ...how does it wear?   Do you think it will hold up under foot traffice, or will "wear patterns" start to show up?   Thanks!

Janis - Yes, the dark is very popular in our area.  Oh and yes, they should definitely do this BEFORE they move in - it's less expensive and so much easier.  Otherwise, they need to move out and move back in again (plus go away on vacation).

Judith - Glad you are seeing the same thing.  I've seen below a few times too in some homes.  Obviously, it works best when the wood are different (here in some of the older and higher end homes, they'll have the walnut and maple borders (sometimes 4 rows) - it looks really cool).  I did have a customer do a stencil (like what you showed...I need to get a picture).  We put down the light stain, and then I think 1 coat of poly.  then, we buffed the floors.  then she did the stencil.  then, we put another coat of poly on, if I recall correctly.  Obviously this doesn't wear as well as there is less protection there...and I think putting at least 2 coats of poly is better.  (this was a rental and she didn't want to spend more).  I suppose you could periodically screen the floors and add another coat of poly for more protection.

Kathy - Thank you.  You are so sweet.  Yes, it is a great combo w/ those white cabinets.

The distressed pre finished engineered is popular here in the darker colors.  Oak has run its course here in CA and not real popular as it once was back in the 1980s. I always liked the quarter sawn vs the peeled look of oak.  The reds are not as popular either as in the past.  Dark colors and exotic species have really caught on.  I will say sanding an existing prefinished distressed  engineered wood floor with an aluminun oxide finish is not recomended to achive a dark color, better call the flooring girl for a new wood look.  Love the knowledge given to the agents in your post, suggested.

Debbie doing an ebony color hardwood floor is not something that I have every considered doing, but it does look good now that I see it in a picture.

Michael - Thank you so much.  Yes, the distressed look is very popular in some areas and it works better w/ darker colors as the stain pools for that effect.  Also, I think another reason that dark has caught on here is that it hides the graining so it gives oak a new and more modern look.

Joy - I so agree.

George  - I'm so glad you like the look.

Shannon - Thank you so much.  I really appreciate that.
