Who Turned Out the Lights?

Last night at 6:00 PM I had an appointment to show a property in Tottenville. A newer Colonial tucked at the South West corner of town. It was dark and raining when I got there, and the house vacant. But, I could stand on the front step under the roof canopy and not get wet.  I am working with customers with excellent credit and ready to buy. The Buyers called me from Main Street the next block over trying to find the house. I gave them directions.... The door knob had a lock box, and I retrieved the keys, and opened the door. I reached in to turn on the lights and nothing except total darkness. What? No Lights!  I called the listing agent about three times when he finally returned my call. I asked, should I  trip the circuit breaker, or is there some trick to turn on the lights, I don't know about? Foolish me grasping for some luck.  "No, He said, the owners must have turned off the power to the house." He continued, "I told him not to turn off the electric."  OK, I'll just re- schedule.  The buyers arrived and were determined to look. I didn't have a flash light and they didn't either.  Their 15 year old daughter came up with a great idea! She proceeded to walk into the house and flicked open her cell phone. And then there was light.

Where there is a will, there is a way, but a nice reminder to carry a flashlight. You never know what might happen.

Before I put a flashlight in my glovebox there was many a time the old cel phone did the trick!  To the point, though, I had buyers that wanted to see homes in a particular subdivision. (new)  It specifically said for each listing, "Lights may or may not be on." Huh?  I called the listing agent who was unable to help because #1 - I didn't have the lot numbers.  Well, the lot #s were in MLS, only the addresses.  He didn't know the addresses only lot numbers.  #2 - When we did narrow down which houses were which he simply didn't know which had power and which didn't.  My buyers could only see the homes after 6pm so we knew it would be dark.  Needless to say, after many phone calls and me driving out to the subdivision, I never got anywhere - we moved on.  How can you show a house without power?

One of the first things we always check on is the utilities. We call to make sure the utilities are on so that no-one wastes a trip. I always carry 2 good flashlights with me as well. Never leave home without one as you never know when you will need it! A good professional flashlight costs about $125.00 but they last. The first one I purchased 7 years ago is still working. I had to replace the batteries last year.  8-)

With more and more short sales and forclosures, it will surely happen again. I think I will get one of those hats they have in LOWES with the light on it. That would be a conversation starter!

What we don't do to show a house. It's amazing.  I like the idea of the hat with the light too.

Concetta, what a funny story, and a sorry homeowner trying to sell their house. Does this mean Realtors need to carry flashlights at night? I've used a flash one time with my digital camera to illuminate a dark room and then we looked at the image. And homeowners wonder why it takes so long to sell a house!

Connie; an attractive girl like you should always carry a flashlight,, or more spacifically, one of those metal Police flashlights for two reasons;  first of all, to provide light in cases like this, as well as self defense, in case you need it.

Or better yet, why don't you wear sneakers that light up when you walk in them- like the orange pair you wore to the SIBOR Christmas party last year?
