I'm Glad it Was Only a Dream

By
Real Estate Agent

At 3:53 this morning, I woke in a sweat from a disturbing dream akin to a combination of the television show, “Shark Tank,” and the children’s movie, “Alice in Wonderland.”

At the dream's beginning, I was with a couple I have worked with off and on over the years.  In real life, I had sold them their first home, they had moved up twice, and they also had bought rental homes.

In the dream, they had driven by a house with a For Sale sign.  They were interested!  The home was not listed in the MLS.  When I called the number on the sign, I reached an agent, who was unwilling to share whether the home was a conventional seller, a foreclosure, or a short-sale.  And she would not provide a price.  When I inquired about showing instructions, I was told there was no lockbox, and that a one-hour time period had been calendared for all interested buyers to view the property with their agents at once.

My clients and I attended the calendared viewing of the home.  I noted there were two other sets of buyers also present with their agents.

The house was clean.  It appeared occupied with furniture and a few telltale signs.  There were clothes in the closets, a tube of toothpaste and toothbrush on a bathroom counter.   I was taking notes during the viewing on a yellow legal pad, a practice, in the awaken world, I have never done.  At least not during an initial showing.  But in the dream, another agent asked to borrow my pencil.  After the loss of the pencil, I set to memory the home was vintage, 1890s or so.  Originally it had been given a delightful design.  However, over the years it had endured additions and alterations.  These changes had been carried out in a quirky dysfunctional way.

During the viewing, my Mrs. Client kept saying she was hungry.

As we neared the end of viewing session, the listing team began shuttling the three sets of buyers and their agents, out the back door, into a canvas tunnel and on into a tent.  There were chairs, but not enough for everyone to sit.  Once everyone had either found a chair or at least found standing ground, the leader of the listing team addressed each homebuyer, “Are you buying?”  The tone of the question, coupled with the unusual marketing methods of this property, had my clients and I wondering exactly what was meant.  I spoke up, and said, “Are you asking if we are still interested in buying this house?”  The response, “No, we want to know if you are buying it!”

All other buyers quickly said, “Yes.”  I deduced from the fact that they couldn’t ALL buy the house, then we could safely say “Yes” at that stage also, since nothing was on written contract.  I hoped to keep us in the game until more answers about the property would be revealed.

It was about that time, my Mrs. Client informs she has ordered a sandwich at the café next door.  She asks if I will go pick it up.

Although I was uncomfortable leaving my clients behind at the house while picking up a sandwich, I did so.  The line at the café was long.  Finally, with the sandwich in hand, I returned to the house and worked my way around trying to again find my clients.  All to no avail!

The listing team approached me, handed me my pencil back, and informed me they had found new representation for my clients.   I was strangely relieved because the bazaar happenings made me feel like I had fallen down a rabbit hole.

After I woke, I realized the listing team was similar to individuals who show up on “Shark Tank.”  They have a product.  At first we know little about the product.  But the potential “buyers” (potential investors) of the product on “Shark Tank” are the panel.  They begin to ask questions.  They want to know how much can be made from the product.  They’re interested in determining its performance and real value.  They’re interested in risk.  They dissect the product to ponder if it is where they want to put their money as business investment and enterprise.

Home buying is similar to that!  We want to know the cost of the home.  Is it valued properly?  Is it structurally sound?  How are the schools?  Is it a neighborhood likely to sustain value and build equity?   Homebuyers usually want to know the answers to these questions and often more, before acknowledging they will buy.

Fortunately, I have not ever encountered the scenario laid out in my dream.  But, it had me wondering if such a scene could be lurking out there on the horizon.  Real estate professionals have experienced many unusual circumstances these past few years.  These things were never dreamed of in the marketplace even a decade ago.  The real estate arena is an ever evolving canvas.

As I sit here this morning, in front of my keyboard typing this blog, I think there must be a reason I feel a compulsion to visit the costume shop in Old Sacramento, to pick up a Mad Hatter’s hat!  And, perhaps a rubber shark for my desk too!  But first I will be signing up for my continuing education classes.  I wonder if a course is offered in “Shark Tank” and “Alice in Wonderland.”

Larry - Thank you for the "suggest."  It is greatly appreciated.  It was not a cold sweat, but hot one instead.  I need to rememberl what the heck it was I ate before bedtime last night:-)

Gary - One of my pet peeves with the "Shark Tank" show is it actually shows the reality of how investors in this country think.  On numerous occassions, the panel will think a product is a good idea, but ONLY if the work is OUTSOURCED to produce it.  I continually wonder how in a global marketplace, the American worker can compete with an off-shore worker willing to work all day, for a wage that is not sustainable for life in this country.  And why are tariffs to help equalize the marketplace such a bad idea???

Linda - I really woke in a bit of a panic at first.  The first question coming to mind, "How do I get a certification for THAT?"

Fred - I am one of those unusual individuals, who dream many vivid dreams a night, and usually remember most of them.  Gratefully, most are pleasant!  I think the closest we come to the scenario I had in the dream last night is the "auction" environment.  Buyers have a list of homes coming up for auction.  They are provided little access, no disclosures, and they need to be ready to bid armed with little knowledge, a whole lot of faith, and skills to overcome whatever property flaws are found after they have successfully bid.

You've gotta lay off the Bailey's Irish Cream before bedtime, Myrl. At least everybody was dressed and you had no naked buyers to contend with.

Oh my goodness, Elizabeth!  That's too funny!  There wasn't any Bailey's Irish Cream involved, but when I awakened after the dream I could have used an iced one for certain.  You should have seen the sweat dripping off of me.  And, when are naked buyers something one should "worry" about contending with?

I hope this is not something your subconscious is picking up about where marketing listings is heading.  What a mess that would be.

Chris Ann - There have been a few of my dreams that have turned out to be prophetic.  I'm hoping this is not one of them.  When you stop to think about it though, the "auction" environment is a little like it already!

Hi Myrl, my husband can't believe that I remember my dreams. He doesn't and is just amazed when I start telling him about my dreams.  Like Alexandra, enjoyed reading this post and hopefully it is not prophetic.

Alexandra - I'm glad you enjoyed the post, and thanks for the "suggest."  It is greatly appreciated!  I'm really hopeful the dream isn't prophetic too.  There's only so much sweat I want to experience in my life:-)

Rebecca - I have family members who are astonished that I remember my dreams too.  They are equally amazed that my dreams are in full vivid color.  I don't understand why anyone would dream in black and white. . .What's up with that:-)

Myrl ... I'm lucky if I can remember I even had a dream! BUT then,  I stopped eating spicy food before bedtime!  If I had read this earlier I'd have been chuckling all day ... now ... I'm afraid to go to bed!

Jack - I'm blaming this dream on the pesto.  I have a great recipe for making it, and I was eating it on everything yesterday.  It's as follows. . .Don't eat before bedtime:-)

  • 2 cups fresh basil leaves, packed
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/3 cup pine nuts
  • 3 or 4 cloves garlic
  • Salt and ground black pepper to taste

Put all ingredients in a food processor and pulse until blended to desired consistency.

Hi Myrl,

I also suggested your post because I think I've been down similar rabbit holes and couldn't explain it. Yes! Sometimes we live out nightmares and don't even know how we survived.

I especially like the part, "My client kept saying she was hungry." Hmmmm..... I wonder what Freud would say about that!

I could see your story becoming a movie, perhaps an orientation movie for new agents, or incorporated into an MCE class.

In any case, you have a lot on your plate right now and I think you're due for a nice, quiet vacation!

This is great - just like you!

Myrl,

Good thing that was only a dream.

I now plan to keep sandwiches in my bag of tricks to prevent some things.

Patricia - My daughter is working on a doctorate in clinical psychology.  I've been meaning to send this blog over to her to see what she has to say:-)  There were a couple of weeks this month when things were coming from all angles.  Much of it was very pleasant, but exhausting.  It is quieter now.  I'm finally catching up!  You're right though, I could use a vacation.  Perhaps in a couple of months.

Pete - That's cute.  I can see that happening.   Open briefcase - Contents: I-Pad, yellow legal pad, pencil, and most definitely a sandwich:-)

Myrl, My first thought in reading your crazy story about your dream is how vividly you could even remember all of the details of the dream. That's amazing. I have to write mine down as soon as I awaken from the dream so I can remember them.

Too much real estate and not enough sleep for Myrl.

Joshua - You're very welcome!  I hope you are having a great week!

Sandy - It was the longest time before I realized that my dreams tended to be more vivid than average.  There are a lot of dreams I don't remember for long, but others stick with me.

Hi Myrl, That was not a dream, it was a nightmare, LOL. But there was something redeeming in it, the Mad Hatter Hat and the Shark for the Desk. Plus the reminder that you should always carry a sandwhich on your showings .
