I Was Only Gone For 30 Minutes!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with KGC Properties LLC, Tucson Property Management & Real Estate

"I was only gone for 30 minutes...."  and "my house was broken into...they took everything..", cried a tenant this morning.  30 minutes.  That's a long time for a thief - usually they are in an out in less time than that!

After making sure she was alright, I asked, "Did you happen to get the renters insurance I recommended when you signed the lease?"  With a sigh of relief, she said yes.

But not many tenants opt to get renters insurance.  And really, though should get it considering it's not that expensive - and compared to replacing items out of pocket - it's cheap!

A few things to know about renters insurance:

There are different types of renters insurance policies.  Make sure you explore all your options before picking just any insurance.

It may help you pay for living expenses if your current rental home becomes unlivable.  Although a landlord can handle many situations, there are major sitations wherein landlords do not have to provide living arrangements for you.

"Other people." That's really one of the big reasons people get renters insurance.  And other people, are people that come to your home, get hurt, fall down, etc., and then end up suing you for whatever reason.  Renters insurance can help with third party liability.

Your belongings. This is the other big reason people get renters insurance. Worried about cost?  It doesn't have to be expensive. Think about this.....your computer, flat screen TV, etc., how much did those items cost?  Now, compared to a few hundred dollars a year for renters insurance, isn't it worth it if you had to replace them?

It is!  So take 30 minutes of your time today and call your insurance agent - so the next time you're gone for 30 minutes - you'll have some peace of mind.

Hello Gabrielle,Great post. I don't think renters really realize how important it is to have an insurance.

Renters insurance is priceless! I am not sure why people try to get away with not having it. I guess they really believe that nothing bad will ever happen to them.

Also, home owners insurance won't cover your stuff if their is a leak. Renters insurance is a must for any renter.

Gab,

No keys around here without a renters policy. Their stuff is less important than the liability insurance it also carries with it.

Far to many renters fail to buy insurance and that create big time issues for them.

Good luck and success.
