Wildlife in Placerville, CA

One of the benefits of being a homeowner in Placerville and the foothills of the Sierras is that you get to be close to the wildlife on a regular basis.

Two Deer in Placerville

These deer were right outside in the front yard acting as if they lived there.

It made me stop and think…

Who is intruding on whose property?

To answer what is no doubt a rhetorical question, we are on their property. They were here first.

You may be onto something. But still - I feel like they're the intruders when they munch on my garden. I wouldn't mind sharing, but they don't need to take everything!

Tom: You definitely need to fence off those parts of the garden you don't want them to get to. We used to have them stroll through regularly. Now we make them go around. I don't feel bad because we have thousands of acres of national forest around us in Del Norte County. Cute photo with Bambi and her mom.

We have lived in our home for seven years, we are continually set back to the original "god directed" landscaping. Maybe we should try something different Marti.

It would be quite an effort to fence off the area Hella. I wonder what the CC&R's say about deer fencing in our "sensitive" community.

Yes, such an interesting way to look at it.  I think I live in my cat's apartment.  And, I'd hate to see what they would do if another cat ventured in.

We had deer in our yard and enjoyed watching them. Our house is only two lots away from the Prescott National Forest. I don't think the deer know about that boundary as it is not fenced.

We don't have the deer any more. I think it has something to do with Bo, our recently adopted Australian Shepherd. He LIVES to chase anything that moves.

Good morning Tom.....I love this and the question you pose. Seems to me it is their property at least as much as the humans.

Hi Tom,

What a cute post and I was so curious from the title and certainly not disappointed. Thanks so much for the adorable picture. We used to have deer in our area but the city made the land owners put up chain linked fence south of us on this rural road so now the wildlife stay on the other side. I miss seeing them at night mainly but perhaps it will keep them from getting hit by cars.

That reminds me, our county has built an underpass that allows the deer to cross under the freeway. Should be interesting to see how that works out Kristin.

Thanks for the comments today!

Well let me see!  Man has dwelled in stick houses in Placer, Sacramento and El Dorado County for less than 200 years now.  Prior to that, man lived in teepees and caves.  I suspect the deer were here first, although the teepees were often noted to have walls made from the hides of the deer!  I guess we could suspect the relationship between man and beast has been tenuous at best. . .tsk, tsk!

You are right Myrl, it probably has been tenuous at best.

Maybe we should just continue to share the land.
