When is Decorating Dated? Who decides what is in style?

AvocadoAnd how to make money when everyone has done it? Everyone decorated in Avocado..lets change it to Lime Green..now lets change it to Aqua Green. Who decides when a color is right or wrong?Lime Green

There is no rule book when it comes to decorating. But if there were, the rules are meant to be broken.

I recently read an article about a decorator’s idea of dated decorating.Obviously it is a decorator trying to drum up some business.   Not to say there isn’t some truth…just that dated doesn’t mean poor quality or bad taste or just an older look.  Ugly is ugly I don’t care what year it is!   I don’t agree with every decorator’s work I see.   It is what we like, the style, the color that makes our house our home.   Yes, everything comes back around in style some way or another.  Maybe just a different shade of color or textile texture.

 7 Sins of Decorating

#1-Mauve.

MauveIt has come and gone. A thing of the 80’s and 90’s. If you are using mauve…you are in a time warp.  I am not a mauve person, and would think most men would object.  But perhaps another shade not so drab.  I personally don’t like any “dusty color”.  So let's change it to plum or eggplant. Try Eggplant

#2-Track Lighting.  Track and recessed lighting interrupt a beautiful ceiling. Track lighting is bulky and clunky.   I would agree with that point on track liTrack Lightingghting. I have never liked it even when it was the newest and hottest thing going. But,  I still love recessed lighting.  There are just some places you need light and don’t have room for something hanging down in the way.  So have to disagree on that one.

Bold Tile#3-Tiles.  Vivid colored tiles are from 20 years ago.   I am not a vivid color person myself…but have seen some beautiful tile work and ceramic sinks.  I think this may be a personal choice. Art is art…but I would think twice before I installed something that would limit the decorating choices down the road for myself or someone else. Bold Sink

#4-Brightly colored oriental rugs.  They say only pale rugs are in now.  I am not a rug person, but guess if I needed a pop of color it would be a rug, or a pillow or some accent piece of furniture.  Some of those rugs are really expensive. If it looks good, I say keep it.

#5-Wall paper borders.  1980’s over decorating is how it is described.  Pretty much!  But I still see decorators doing it in children’s rooms.  I actually love wall paper boarders…everywhere except the tops of walls.  They can border a mirror, a door way…give a real pop to the inside of a closet.

Floral is out?

#6-Flower power. Not in upholstery.  No more floral sofas they say.  Funny I just read another article where a decorator said….get a couple floral or loud colored chairs for a pop of color.  I have seen some  ugly floral sofas and some really beautiful ones. So get the beautiful one!  If it is on Craig’s List…it is probably an ugly one.Drapes In or Out

#7-Valances-Say no to the droopy swoop.  But you can have a tailored valance with box pleats or a cornice style.  I have seen some homes with blinds and no curtains, curtains made out of placemats , sheets and other odd things.  If it droops and looks good…I don’t have a problem with it.  Sometimes it is just for a pop of color.  Tailored isn’t always for every look. So I can’t go with this one.

Let me repeat: There is no rule book when it comes to decorating. But if there were, the rules are meant to be broken.

I will say that I meet a lot of women who will admit they have no idea when it comes to decorating. So if you know someone who does…introduce them!  Clutter is the #1 “decorating don’t” in any color or style. The only rule you don’t break when it comes to decorating.

If you aren’t sure what you want when it comes to decorating. Start looking through magazines.  Start tearing out those pages and start a scrap book of things you like.  Then, start going for that look.  Whether you have the money to do the whole room at once, or you have to do it one piece at a time.  It will get there!  But start! Do you have items that just need repainted? New knobs?  New light fixtures? Sometimes it is just simple things.  Never be afraid to ask for help!

Alayne-Hopefully it is just a repaint it a different shade job.

William-I am always surprised by what excites folks about a home. Look at Rachel Ray...favorite color is orange!

Tammy-You know how to do it!

Gena- That is an excellent move!

Nan-Great Idea!!

Bill-It is the rare one who admits they are out dated.

Bryan-That is the one look I absolutely hate. I think it is so cold and hard and unwelcoming. (But it is a clean look.)

Ann & Maureen-Exactly!

Debbie-Yes, and spray paint is such a cheap fix!

Joni- And not all realtors have great taste...so leave it to the professionals if you have any doubt.

Gary-Floral wall paper is a very dated look.

Sandy-Guilty! LOL!

Rueben-There is good old and bad old for sure!

Dave-You can never go wrong with simple.

Bob-I love vintage...but ugly is ugly in any style.

Chris & Dick-I think that is why decorators stay in business..they keep changing the rules!

Judi-I think we are all quilty of needing to make change if we were to list our homes..me included!

I agree with others in the fact that a lot of this will come down to personal tasta.  There are always certain styles that will "in" or "out" at any given time period, however, as you said, art is art and beauty reall is in the eye of the beholder.

Sherry, I like your point number 7, I'm not a mauve person but I do enjoy an eggplant color. I  really like color in small doses and of course it has to add to or define a room (i think?).

Please add paint faux finishes/techniques  to your list! But I will always say a dated immaculate home will sell faster than a update dirty home.

I don’t know what color mauve is. If you pointed to a wall and asked, “Is that mauve.” My answer would be “I don’t know. Is mauve a real word?” I don’t think that is a color that I want in my man cave.

John-Mauve is like a dirty grayish pink... Not a color for a man cave usually...

Karen-Especially the DYI Faux Finishes!

Wayne & Jean Marie- on sale is my best price!

Adrian-(My whole house is done in eggplant.) I love it too!

Charlie-It is for sure personal taste. Just because it is in style doesn't mean everyone will like it.

Sherry..I so agree. I'm not sure who makes up these rules anyway ,and yes sometimes I get the feeling that the decorating talking heads and suppliers tell us that brass, for example, is no longer in so they can sell us all a new material. Ugly is ugly, and it is also in the eye of the beholder.

Great list Sherry.  Muave is terrible.  Absolutely terrible.  LOL.  Thanks for sharing.

Sherry, I agree, it all has to do with personal taste. I sold a house a few years ago that had a Coppertone stove and refrigerator. The buyers thought it was cool.

Personal taste is fine when you are living there - but if for some reason things change and you have to sell your home, it probably better be neutral for most buyers. The last thing you want to do is your limit your buyer pool - particularly in this market. Just had a situation where someone has their home under contract and needs to find a home quickly. They are downsizing, so major projects are just not a possibility for them. If you have a home with a lot of wallpaper, or strong paint colors (it's not just paint - it's a project) - your home will more than likely sit on the market much longer.

It's dated about two years before it comes back into fashion. Which is right after you re-decorate it (what you just got rid of) becomes the new, hot, in fashion, thing.

Great post Sherry,

I LOVE wallpaper. i.e. the "new" "modern" wallpaper that is. My friends told me how crazy I was until they came over to my new house and saw it and they loved it too. Everything comes back around it seems.

Oh, for the record, we had it pre-treated and professionally hung so it will be easy to remove when its time to sell!

Different strokes for different folks.  Different people have different ideas about what is beautiful.  As long as we're happy with our choices, then there's no problem. :)
