Thinking of Renovation Before Selling?

Thinking of renovating before selling you Tuscaloosa home?  Think twice and consult your real estate agent.  Some renovations pay off, some do not.  Tina Fountain has some good advice via her blog.

During a recent listing appointment for a repeat customer they asked me if would help them to sell their home if they did some extensive renovations. The home that they were selling was orignally built in the 1940's and had been through at lest two full renovations with the last being about 10 years ago.

The sellers had purchased the home thorough our firm 5 years ago and since then they had updated the kitchen, master bath, and converted a guest bedroom to a home office. While the home was in excellent shape, there were still some changes that they were wanting to make.

Of course, it's not an easy yes or no question and it's one that we tend to get quite often. So, it prompted me to write a blog that should cover most situations when a seller is thinking of making extensive renovations prior to selling.

Beth, I agree that many renovations do not pay off if you sell soon after, great re-blog.

Thanks, Carol!  I love renovations, but we both know it is for your own enjoyment!

Beth, great timing.  I'm dealing with a young lady now who had rented a home out to Katrina victims and unfortunately the home is now trashed.  We need to decide if the house should be sold "as-is" or go ahead with needed repairs and sell in a more appealing condition.

Nick, I am so sorry that your client's home was trashed.  That is never a fun feeling for you or the client, but I know that you will help her make the right decision.
