HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS
Those of us living along the Gulf Coast always keep our eyes and ears open when we hear that a possible tropical disturbance appears to be heading in our direction. Tropical Storm Ernesto is currently churning its way toward the Gulf today. It weakened a bit overnight but is expected to gain strength over the next few days.
Although it is way too early to predict where it will land and how much steam it will pick up, but is is never too early to begin making preparations now. Waiting until a real threat is out in the Gulf is usually too late. Begin now to make a few plans should we have a storm heading this way.
Here are a few suggestions to begin to prepare for a tropical storm or hurricane:
-
If you home office, move your files to a safe place. Put them up high and in a room where there is little chance for them to be damaged.
-
Have a plan to move all computers, printers and other electronic equipment to a safe place away from potential water damage.
-
Back up your files! Have a plan should your computer not be accessible for a few days.
-
Keep plenty of bottled water and other water containers in case the power goes out.
-
Buy a lot of matches. Matches were the one thing that many people did not have after Hurricane Ike.
-
Stock up on canned foods, juice and other food sources that can be eaten if the power goes out.
-
If investing in a generator make sure that it can be vented properly while running.
-
Keep a first aid kit handy. Make sure all medications are filled and up to date.
-
Put away any items outside that might become missiles.
-
Have a chain saw serviced and ready to go. These were hot commodities during Ike.
