WOULD YOU WANT TO OWN YOUR OWN TOWN?

By
Real Estate Agent with Sotheby's International Realty Canada - Brokerage

I remember the first time I ever heard of someone buying a town for themselves.  It was back in 1989 and it was the actress Kim Basinger who bought the town of Braselton, Georgia after she divorced Alec Baldwin.

I thought that was pretty cool back then (even though it didn't really turn out well for her)

In current times it seems there are many towns privately owned and many more are now available for sale.

From bankrupt towns, abandoned towns, towns like Buford, Wyoming population: One,  to different towns around the world

it seems everything is for sale these days!

And today, you can own a piece of history:  Custer's Last Stand - The entire historic town of Garryowen, Montana, will be auctioned off to the highest bidder on August 15.

What would you do with a town of your own?

I live in a tiny town of 5200 that seems HUGE in comparison to the above towns but it is a great place to call "Home"!  If you would like a small town experience, come to Gananoque.  Or even a small city, I can help you find the perfect place in Kingston or Brockville  . . .

Give me, Susan Emo a call if you like the idea of living in a place with history.  Not Garyowen's history, but history none the less!

Good grief, I can hardly handle my own little house.  Who would clean the town?  I don't know nothing about street sweeping. Miss Scarlet.

Susan, at first I said Yes! I want my own town. But the more I think about it, I'd have to do a LOT more work to keep it running.

Susan, a Small town is so charming! In Italy where my husband is from, everyone knows everyone! Even as many of them have moved to the states they often bump into each other at wedding and reminisce about their small home town.

Ellen - small towns are different and there are never any secrets!!    I think it is fun to hear about your husband's village friends bumping into each other in New York -  the world is getting smaller, not just our towns and villages :0)

I wouldn't be so much into owning a town Susan, I'm holding out for my own tropical island, complete with a lagoon and palm trees.

No, but I'd love to own a small country with my own Army.

Now Susan, after reading the comments back and forth I must say that I agree with Malcolm.  I want my own private island in the Caribbean. Know any for sale?  A few years ago there was one on Findley Lake in western New York.

I grew up in small town and now live in country and love it, but I still enjoy being a tourist in NYC or San Francisco. Next Montreal.

Hi Valerie -  we did have some traffic 'issues' awhile back due to some major accidents on the 401 and all traffic being re-routed thru our tiny little town.  Sorry you were caught up in it!

Malcolm -  I know of about 1000 Islands for you :0)

Tammy - you'd make an amazing commanding officer of your army!

Mary -  as I said to Malcolm, why go tropical when I have 1000 islands for you on our doorstep?  I too LOVE Montreal!!

Pamela - you are too funny!   Thank you again for your correspondence with my Mother.
