I'll Be Walkin To Raise Money At The Portland Brain Tumor Walk,You Can Help!

Captain Bill's Manatees at the Portland Brain Tumor Walk 2011For the last couple of years, I've walked the three miles at Willamette Park in Portland to raise money for the Brain Tumor Society at the Portland Brain Tumor Walk to help find a cure as well as help those struggling with this.

Why do I do this? Many years back, I watched as my best friend struggled when her sister died in her twenties from a brain tumor. So young and very sad leaving two young kids motherless.

A couple of years ago, my hubby and I met a man named "Captain Bill". Yes, he was a true Captain and lived life on the water in a floating home right across from where this walk is. My fond memories of him were smiling, his white beard bright against his deeply tanned face. He fought valiantly to beat his brain tumor, but it sadly took his life as well.

For some reason, this seems like it is getting more and more common. On a personal note, my younger son recently had to undergo surgery for a tumor found in his neck. He is 22! I thought wow..we certainly were very lucky that his was operable and it wasn't in his brain.

I walk for those that have lost their lives, to those families that struggle with their loss, and to those that are living with a diagnosis of a brain tumor.

Last year I wasBrain Tumor Goal huffin and puffin towards the end..since I'm asthmatic...but I pushed forward as I watched those that you know were going through treatment walking the trail. That just made me want to walk further. The walk is this coming on Saturday, August 18th and is a really pretty walk along the Willamette River starting and ending at Willamette Park.

If you would like to join our team, Captain Bill's Manatees, then head over to the Team's Page and next to the Team Captain's name there is a join here link. If you would like to help out with a donation, then while at the Team Page click on my name (Cindy Westfall) and then go to the box with the red goal and click donate here. Our team goal is $1,000 and so far we are at $375..so we have a long way to go!

You can also check out the main page of the National Brain Tumor Association to see if there is a walk in your state or location!

Together we can make a change!

I had no idea about your son, Cindy. I'm so happy he is well. That's a good cause. I'll be back to contribute.

Hi Jill...you know that odd thing is that the daughter of my best friends sister that died of a brain tumor had the same exact tumor and surgery a week before my son. She is in her early twenties as well. Scary. I thank you in advance for your contribution!

Cindy, I hope this fund raiser is a huge success and you make it to the end with plenty of air and energy left. It is such a good cause.

What a great cause and good for you promoting it! I, too, had a young friend die of a brain tumor a few years ago. My sister has had a brain tumor for most of her life and as long as it doesn't grow, they aren't removing it and it doesn't affect her life. So far. She has it checked three times a year. So glad things worked out well for your son!

Cindy, What a great cause! I was moved by your article, and am happy to hear that there are people out there that are helping fight this great mystery.

Are you doing the bike bridge ride this weekend in Portland, where they shut down all the bridges so people can bike over them. It sounds amazing!  My husband is driving up on Sunday to do it!

Blessings!

Cindy-

Best of luck with this event.  I'm glad things worked out for your son as well; that must have been heart wrenching.
