Fairfax County is known for its outstanding neighborhoods and wonderful neighbors. However, great neighborhoods don’t just happen – they’re built over time upon a foundation of mutual respect. Anyone can begin the process. You just have to take the first step.
Neighbors may each live in their own homes, but they all share the same street. Take a few minutes to have a good look at your part of it. Does your property complement or detract from the street? You needn’t invest in big-money projects to make your yard look tidy. It may simply mean picking up the clutter and mowing the lawn, but the impact will be appreciated all the way down the block.
Consider, too, the noise level in your area. Are you a major contributor to it? Day-to-day hubbub is to be expected. Car doors close, screen doors slam, and dogs occasionally bark. If you’re expecting to make more noise than usual, or to make noise later in the evening, let your neighbors know in advance. Better yet, if it’s a party of some sort, invite them along. They may decline, but at least they’ll know you were considering their comfort.
Practice good parking etiquette. Be sure you’re not blocking anyone's access, or forcing someone to wiggle out of a tight spot. Don't over-rev the engine of your vehicle, and try to park in front of your home, not theirs. Slamming car doors and brightly shining headlights can be annoying at any time, but especially so at night. Be the kind of neighbor you wish you had, and you may just find that a bit of paying it forward now will work out even better than you’d hoped.
When you’re ready to purchase a home, be sure to consider not only the home itself but also its neighborhood. Take a good look at the street and the other homes on it. Visit the area at different times during the day – commuter time, midday, and evening – to get a more complete picture of what it would be like to live there. Perhaps most important of all, find an agent you can trust to help you find the perfect property.
