When You've Got Nothing Else to Do on a Sunday Afternoon...
When my friend Marilyn asked me if she could surprise me and take me somewhere without asking any questions, I refused. There's no way I was going to allow her to blindfold me and take me anywhere. Marilyn is a free spirit in every since of the word. She could take my ANYWHERE. I wanted to know what she had in mind. I was shocked when she told me she wanted to go check out the Hazzard Homecoming in Amissville, VA this weekend. It was an event put together by Ben Jones, a.k.a. Cooter from the 80's TV series The Dukes of Hazzard.
The website for the event showed a ton of events. Live music. Wrestling. Even a BMX bike race. And, of course, a chance to meet the cast of the show. I'm still not sure I understand the wrestling and BMX bike race connection to The Dukes of Hazzard. As for the Civil War re-enacters, I really didn't get that.
Off we went. At $25 a head, I was shocked that for anything else you wanted, like a photo with a celebrity, you had to fork out more dough. We passed. Seemed anywhere there was even a minor celebrity there was a hand out for more money. I was having plenty of fun people watching with Marilyn and seeing the confused looks on the faces of her grandchildren, ages five and three. Thank goodness there were also things for them to do like water slides and moon bounces.
The music was good. Cooter's Garage Band did some great country tunes. I really enjoyed that. And that was not anything that required more money, but it was probably the best thing about the event.
It was shocking to me that there no alcohol anywhere on the grounds. None. Sweet tea and soda. Those were your beverage choices. Is it just me, or does beer sound like the perfect accompaniment to viewing the General Lee?
To say it was an odd mix of events is an understatement, but it was great in that it was completely different than anything I usually do in my down time.
