Aussie view of end of Olympics

Tonight I'll get to see (or doze through) parts of the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in London.

Since ours is a mixed marriage household (American/Australian) any watching of the Games of the XXX Olympiad has had International Implications - excessive information for her: I have had to dig deeply to find mine.

For her: entitlement to "gold". For me: moral victories in medals of other colors. I relished the comment of an Australian swimmer made to the Aussie Press after being forced into silver by one one hundredth of a second " I will quickly get over the loss; I will be a better person because of it."

It has been a pleasure to watch the best of the world's best perform, and in so many sports and disciplines.

But my distraction is over; it's time to get back to work. I expect it will take a few days of recovery yet.

Important Note

I have a soft spot for the activities of the PARA Olympics (Inspiration Paradise) still to come, So I may be distracted yet awhile.

It sounds like you have your own rooting sections for each team in your household.  I'm glad you've got everything under control as those loyalties can create some tension if not handled properly.

Mark - Different perspectives. At least I could explain the British aspects of the Games to CL. Cultural differences always apparent in our home.

Doug - I get to appreciate two cultures but sometimes like barracking for two different sides on Grand Final Day. We can always agree to disagree. Not a biggie.

Wallace - good to see you could find suitable alternative distractions. Golf slows down the car pace slightly. Can be quite restful.

I know Australians love to root and cheer, normally they would be the loudest ones in pubs.

I've experienced this in Thailand on many occasions.

I love that quote "I will quickly get over the loss; I will be a better person because of it." What a great attitude!

Larry--it must very interesting watching any competition in your house.  Sort of like having a political discussion witht the in-laws or out-laws.

Enjoy the para-games.  I will be there, too.

In my book anyone that participates in the Olympics is a winner.. Just to qualify takes amazing discipline and skill!

Pete - anywhere in the world gatherings of Aussies tend to produce same reactions and results. Feel free to join in.

Laura - 'Tis a particularly good one, I appreciate the stories behind the stories of the competitors.

Mary - Adds to a lively existance. Cultural differences regularly get me in/out of trouble.

Janis - So true and so easily forgotten. I added South Africa's Oscar Pistorius as truly amazing with his metal running shoes ~ walking alone for double BK amputee is 200% harder than for full bodied person, and then sprinting, who knows? All praise to the doers.

Ha ha Larry. Fun to read this post. I think you're suffering from a serve case of POD - Post Olympic Depression. However, it sounds as if you're marital harmony will return though.  Have a good Monday.

Debb - I think I was depressed before the Games were much past opening, of having meetings postponed, no shows, less than total focus. But as time went on, I got caught up as well. Here's to a quick recovery from POD. Thanks for your expert diagnosis.
