Homeowner's InsuranceSomething we probably don't like spending money on is homeowner's insurance for your Wilmette home. We all realize, however, that it's something we have to have if we own a home. Finding yourself without homeowner's insurance at the time of a loss is just not acceptable!

Thinking about homeowner's insurance is another thing that's usually not high on our lists of things to do, but it is something that needs to be done every so often. When the time comes around to renew your policy or purchase a new one, that's a good time to see if your needs have changed. You may even be able to save some money.

Here are a few things to consider when looking at your homeowner's insurance:

1. You'll want to ask your insurance agent if there are any discounts that would be available to you when you renew or buy your homeowner's insurance policy. If you've made certain safety improvements to your home, such as adding an automatic fire sprinkler system, getting a fire-resistant roof, installing burglar alarms or shatter-proof glass, you may be eligible for a lower premium. Don't forget to mention to your agent if you've quit smoking!

2. Be sure to share with your agent if you've recently remodeled. An increase in square footage needs to be reported so you don't find your home underinsured if a claim is filed. Even adding a shed or other outdoor building should also be reported.

3. If you've recently purchased an expensive piece of furniture, art or jewelry, update your agent so it can be added to your policy. Be sure to also ask your agent if there is a per item limit on any items you own. If you find there is, ask your agent what can be done to be sure these items are fully insured.

4. When people leave your household, such as kids leaving home, or someone new moves in, the kids who left have decided to come home to live again, this can make a difference in your insurance coverage as there will now be more or less personal property in your home.

5. Since dog bites accounted for one-third of all homeowner's insurance liability claims in 2009, it's best to let your agent know about your new puppy. You don't want the little fur ball to bite someone, only to find out your homeowner's insurance won't cover it. Beware, your premiums may go up if your pup turns out to be a biter!
