What is Pergo flooring?

Pergo is a BRAND NAME of Laminate Flooring.

Laminate flooring and Pergo in Westchester NYIt is similar to how Kleenex is a brand of tissues or Band-Aid is brand of adhesive bandages. Lots of people misuse the terms in all 3 of these examples.

There are many brands of laminate flooring, including Pergo, Armstrong and Shaw. Pergo is well known since they invented the category in the mid 70's and began importing to the US in 1994. They also sell their brand at Home Depot which is where many consumers first come in contact with it.

So, what is laminate flooring?

Laminate and pergo flooring installatio westchester countyWell laminate is made to look real, but it’s actually fake. It’s a multilayered synthetic hard surface product made with recycled hardwood. On top, it has a clear melamine wear layer with aluminum oxide which gives it scratch protection – making it resistant to dogs, kids, high heels, chairs, you name it. Underneath the melamine wear layer is the photograph of the wood (or tile) and beneath that is the high density core board. Most laminates look like hardwood (but some look like tile), but they are usually easier to maintain since they are more resistant to scratching. So, if you are worried about young kids, pets or renters, and the wear and tear of your floor, laminate provides a great option.

Laminate flooring is a floating floor and it snaps together. It is not attached directly to the floor (it is neither glued nor nailed); rather, it snaps into place and is held down at the edges of the room (i.e. by the quarter round and transitions). It's important that the floor is flat/level; otherwise it moves as you walk on it. Laminate flooring is usually 7mm to 8mm in height and have an underlayment as a sound/moisture barrier. In total, with the underlayment, it usually raises the floor around 3/8 of an inch.

Pergo and olaminate floors Grand Illusion WestchesterSome people love laminate because it's quick and relatively easy to install (however, too many do-it-yourselfers attempt to install this themselves and fail miserably); others dislike it because it is fake/not real hardwood and they don't like the hollow tinny sound when you walk on it.

Laminate Flooring is Not Real Hardwood; laminate flooring is picture of wood

Laminate has come a long way and some of it looks really real. You will find that there are different grades of laminate - some even have individual planks (just like hardwood) for a more realistic effect. It is a photograph of wood, so it will not improve the value of your home like hardwood will. However, most prefer this hard surface over carpet. Because it's made with recycle hardwood, laminate flooring is not waterproof.

Pergo Laminate is still a great choice for many flooring needs, and I've recommended it several times.  Great info, as always!

Emily - that's great. I'm not really sure what that is...but, there is corkoleum which is a combo of cork and linoleum and it is a floating floor so maybe that's what you meant.

Maureen - Yes, it's best to take your shoes off, and most especially if they are heels.  The worst is when you wear through them and there's a bit of the nail showing through.

Julia - Yes, it's a great option for many places, and it often makes a lot of sense when staging kitchens as it is better looking (and sometimes less expensive) than vinyl.

`Thanks for the info Debbie. It's good to know what the laminate is made of. The problem I have is being able to tell some of the newer laminates from the prefinished hardwoods. Maybe you could write a post on that. Some home buyers only want real hardwood and others prefer laminate. Most expect me to know what I am showing them.

Very informative post Debbie.  Laminate certainly is not real hardwood flooring. Tried that and noticed the difference right away.  Thanks!

Debbie I see more and more laminated floors these day, and now that you mention it, everyone refers to them as Prego whether they are or not.

Very instructive post Debbie.  If I remember my Marketing 101 from grad school, it isn't good that your product name is used generically as there is no longer any product differentiation.  Every time I see laminate flooring, the people say Pergo!

Wayne - Thx so much.  Yes, I have written about laminate vs. engineered hardwood vs. solid hardwood. While I can tell the difference (usually) just by looking at it (and/or feeling/knocking on it), I'm not sure how to explain this in a blog post.  But, my suggestion to you would be to go to a hardwood store near you where they have a lot of it installed on the floor and ask them to explain it to you.  I'm pretty sure that I could explain/show someone if it is in front of me, but have no clue how to explain it on a blog post.

Bobbie - Yes, it certainly is different - both in look, feel and sound.

George - I know; it's so funny.  And, I think a lot of people are searching for this term too (online).

Jay - thx.  Actually, the issue for them is often one of trademark...it's used generically, they can lose their trademark alltogether, and that is very bad.  I think cellophane and escalator are examples of that.

Lou - Thank you so much.  I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

Debbie, That is an excellent description of laminate. I saw some in new homes today that really looked good. It has come a long way.

So many people use laminate and Pergo interchangeably not knowing the difference. I was one of those people a few years back. Ha.

Debbie Pergo is to laminate flooring like Xerox is to copying.  Your post will show agents and consumers that there are many manufacturers of laminate flooring.

Debbie - Yes, it really has.

Shar - Yes, that's so true.  And, the truth is that each brand has higher and lower grades.

Jennifer - Great example!  Thank you.

There are real hardwood floors and there is pergo. It seems, everytime I encounter pergo in one of the houses I flip, it is almost easier to rip it out and start again. Most of the folks that that install it, do it poorly.

Joe - I so agree.  We have seen so many botched do-it-yourself laminate jobs.  And, it's usually very obvious.

Debbie~ There some things that home owners really shouldn't try on their own, installing flooring ~ laminate or real hardwood ~ is one of those things.

This is an excellent post which depicts what Pergo is.  So all Pergo is laminate, but not all laminate is Pergo:-)  It helps knowing that, so folks don't label flooring so adamently, Pergo, when it may be some other brand of laminate instead.  At least I think that's whay you are saying!
