Horse Rescue Done Right: MAERA

In my search for a horse that anyone can ride, I came across Montana Awareness Education and Equine Rehab Association. I saw an ad in Craigslist for a horse that sounded perfect for my family. This lead to being educated about MAERAMAERA looks for good horses that have been purchased to be slaughtered, sometimes horses are turned into them, each situation is individual. They look for horses that will be suitable to place in new homes, they don't rescue every horse. This sets them apart. They pay a little more than the slaughter price for horses that have varying backgrounds but look like a good option. They then have them vetted, farriers take care of their feet, they are wormed, and then tested for 30 days to see what they know and what their personalities will be suited for. The best horses are used for lessons until adopted. Some rescue operations try to save all horses, even those who have serious behavioral or health issues that prohibit them from being adopted. MAERA is located in Belgrade Montana. I took a "quick" trip down there on Sunday to check out 2 horses and chose one of them. We pick him up tomorrow. He is off a ranch, 13 yrs old, and super sweet + the smoothest trot. Perfect for family and friends who are intimidated by horses or who don't ride, those grandchildren can use him when they grow up a bit too.

Kudos to a great project!!

Congratulations on the new adoption.  I wish there were more groups like that.  What a sin that someone who will become a welcome member of your family was destined to be killed and ground up for dog food. Humans can be so arrogant and cruel.  Glad that some aren't.
