Two secrets for Real Estate Success: Trust your Gut & Expect the Best
In a litigious society such as ours, my two secrets are going to seem ludicrous to some. But others will resonate with them.
I developed my abilities in these two areas when I was a teacher and they are as important now as realtor as they were with a classroom of students. I have to pay attention to my emotions, however and find a way to stay in relatively positive energy or neither one works. Feeling good is a prerequisite for both and that can be a challenge at times. So, my only caveat is to proceed with Caution ... I mean a positive state of mind
1. Expect people to be and do their best when they interact with you. According to Wayne Dyer, "If you believe it then you will see it". I had to work at this --the realization that my perception colors reality. If I expect the best, I generally get it from someone or some event. Many of you have probably noticed that someone who may not be the best client for another agent can rise to the occasion with you because of how you perceive them.
2. Trust your instincts. We as humans are equipped with pretty powerful radar and it is especially good when we are feeling calm, good or peaceful. It gets out of whack when we are stuck in negative emotion of any kind. You can actually practice this in low stakes occasions... try to get a feel for someone before you meet them. The more you trust those non-verbal or pre-verbal cues, the better you will get.
When a seller calls that I don't know and wants to sell, I do a check in. There are times when I ask them to come into the office first, sometimes we meet at a coffee shop and other times we will go to their home. It depends on my instinct. My first inclination is that they are sincere and want to buy. Armed with this perception, I meet them and we decide how to move forward. It is usually a wonderful meeting.
When a buyer calls in to see a house, I talk just enough on the phone to get a "gut" read and then decide where to meet them and what to ask. Since so many folks around here do owner finance, it is not the end of the world if they cannot get a mortgage today. What is paramount is that we have a positive, open relationship and are willing to work toward the same goal...getting them a home. People can tell when someone sees the best in them. I can and want to be more of what they see. My business mirrors my life in these two areas.
What uplifting stories do you have when your gut told you to stand by a client and it worked? Ain't life grand?
