Homemade Laundry Soap

A couple of weeks ago, I received a wonderful gift.  It was a jar of homemade laundry soap.  I love using homemade products, especially if I can save money or a little bit of the earth!

Well, I've been using this soap for 2 weeks (that means 15 loads of laundry), and I love it.  Not only does it work well, but my clothes smell fantastic and are much softer than before.

Using the recipe that came with the gift, It cost me $17.00 to make a 10 month supply of Laundry Soap.

So, here is the recipe and the instructions:

  • 4 lb box of Borax
  • Large box of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda
  • Large box of Arm & Hammer Washing Powder
  • 1 jar of Oxy Clean Granules
  • 2 bars of Fels-naptha Soap
  • 2 bars of bath soap (any scent you like).  I used 2 different types to add color to the soap and make it pretty :-)

All of the ingredients can be found on the Laundry aisle at your local grocery store (except the bath soap).

To make the soap, you will need a large container to mix it in.  I used a five gallon bucket lined with a trash bag.  You will need to grate the soap with a cheese grater, and then mix all of the items in the bucket really well.  Viola.... You have laundry soap.  I filled my laundry soap container with enough soap to clean 100 loads of laundry( it only takes 1 tablespoon per load)!  The remainder went into smaller containers to give as gifts (along with the recipe).

I figure I will save about $100 per year, and keep dozens of those large plastic bottles out of the landfill!

FOR LESS THAN 17 BUCKS I CAN BUY MINE FROM COSTCO AND IT DOES 120 LOADS. SOMEDAY IF I CONVERT TO BEING AMISH, OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT....NO DISRESPECT TO THE AMISH, I MIGHT LIKE TO GIVE THAT A TRY. MY MACHINE USES H.E. DETERGENT....LO SUDS STUFF. OTHER KINDS WILL FILL MY LAUNDRY AREA WITH BUBBLE BATH LIKE SUDS ALL OVER THE PLACE. BUT A WASHTUB AND WASH BOARD WON'T ...:)

Amy:

I may try your recipe.  I love making stuff to save money and feel good about myself.  But really does the home made soap perform better than my store bought detergent.  If so, I will give it a try.

Debbie - If the dishsoap works out, I'll share :-)

Jordon - I have a few jars set aside for gifts.... I think folks will appreciate it.  we'll see.

Jeanne - I spend a lot on laundry detergent.  100 Loads plus several gifts..... I'm happy!

Kristin - Apparently (from what I have read), the detergent works for HE too.  They recommend grating the soap much finer than the shredded cheese :-)  But I do not know that for a fact.  After I try the dish soap, I'll let you know.

Rene - Vinegar is AWESOME!  Good for window and mirrors too!

I'e been doing this for years, slightly different recipe, also use 1/3 c of white vinegar for fabric softener.

Really works great, saved money, environment and does make great gifts,  I use with hot or cold water 1tbls up to 3 for heavy loads.  You can add essence oil if you like a different fragrance.  You do not smell smell the vinegar.

Work on front loader HE and just about any other washer system.

David - I love making my own products, especially when I can cut down on the "trash" and the spending!  Good luck!

Bob - From what I have read online, the products are safe..... I sure hope so!

Susan - I have not read too much about Fels naptha, but I did pick up an extra bar to try on tough stains.  Shampoo?  I'll let you know :-)

Samantha - Would love to hear the "blurb" you come up with.

Michael - I'm sure there is something out there comparable to Felz Naptha.....

Sally - I hope you find the ingredients needed.... I'm sure they have something similar if not exact!  Good Luck!

Susan - My hubby turned my favorite quilt pink many years ago..... I don't allow him to do the laundry anymore ;-)

Pam - Hope you like it as much as I do!  I feel very proud every time I start a load of laundry now :-)

Michele - It does look like cheese, but doesn't taste near as good ;-)

Sharon - It's a win, win for me!  Plus, I enjoyed making it..... Bonus!

Georgina - Sorry, I do not know the answer to your question.  I'll see what I can find out!

Larry - Well, my husband jokes that I should be Amish :-)  If my calculations are correct, one batch of this soap will wash 320 loads of laundry.  I only kept 100 scoops and packaged the rest for gifts.  And..... no washboard required!

Evelyn - I have found that it works just as good as my Arm & Hammer Laundry Soap.  I have also learned that Felz Naptha is great for tough stains!  I learned something new from this project.

Jo - Thanks for the tip about the Vinegar.... Maybe the next batch :-)  And thanks for your comment about the different machines.... Good to know!  I doubt I will ever buy laundry soap again!

Thanks for sharing this Amy, this looks much less caustic than the soap my grandmother used to make out of lye.

This is excellent, Amy.  I may pass this info along to Jennifer to see if it is something we'd like to explore as well.  I'm a big fan of homemade "almost anything".
