SWAMP FEATHERS

A recent article published in "The Barred Owl", newsletter of the Baton Rouge Audubon Society, will be of interest to residents of The Lake at White Oak.  Classes are being presented at the Bluebonnet Swamp for children ages 8 to 15 (with a parent) on Sunday afternoons from 1:30-4:30.  People 16 and up may attend alone. These classes will introduce the experience of bird watching to children and their families.  Fees:  standard park admission rates apply ($1-$2).

The Lake at White Oak is a wonderful place to continue the bird-watching interests developed in these classes.  Being bordered on one side of the subdivision with the Amite river and the Amite Woods, we have a wonderful natural habitat for birds.  The lakes and surrounding wooded common properties also attract a wide variety of birds.  Our trails provide a wonderful opportunity for kids and their families to exercise and go bird watching.

The classes are being held on:

  • January 20 - Cool Birds around Baton Rouge.  You know where to find birds?  How about Walmart?  But those birds are pretty boring...come find out about the cool birds you can find right here in the Baton Rouge area, if you just know where to look.
  • January 27 - Hummingbirds - Come learn some fascinating facts about the tiniest of our feathered friends.
  • February 10 - Helping Birds - Sharing ideas about how you can make a difference in the lives of birds.  We'll discuss protection of bird habitat, participation in citizen science programs, and issues that affect birds that you can help with.
  • February 17 - Attracting Birds to Your Yard - What you can do to bring all kinds of birds to your yard where you can enjoy them up close.
