Valerie - Yes, in some of the older homes here in Westchester, laminate just won't work well and we have to go for vinyl. Thankfully, there are now some really classy looking luxury vinyls
Ginny - Thank you so much. Yes, the prep work is important, and when it's missing it will really show.
Debbie: This is an excellent post that clearly identifies the difference between the two. Congrats on this very worthy feature.
Great discussion and comparison between the two floor coverings! Instruction like this is why people should be on AR.
Debbie,
You did a great job comparing laminate and vinyl flooring!!! I learned a lot, thanks!
Have a great day!
Betsy
Nice post to give us the differences of the two kinds of flooring. It's a load of information.
Pergo a brand name I suppose is not very good holding up to dogs that have accidents.
The paper thin top coating peels away and leaves a stain.
Great job explaining the difference between these two floor covering. From time to time as i am shown properties to flip, some of Realtors that do the shows, just have no idea. Pretty funny actually.
Good information here. I have wood laminate in most of my house and like it but think maybe the wood look vinyl would have been a better choice.
Jay - Thank you so much. I really appreciate this.
Betsy - Thanks!
Bruno - Thank you so much.
Richard - Excelent point...and that is true for virtually all laminates.
Debbie, thanks for one of the most informative posts I've seen on flooring, including the links to your other articles!
Picked up a little more useful information from you Flooring Girl............and I knew the difference. Congratulations on the Feature.
Hello Debbie,
Excellent post as many consumers (and agents) are confused with all of the flooring choices. One of the first "mentor moments" I have with new agents, is sending them to a flooring store to learn what is what...don't want anyone calling real hardwood floors laminate!
Debbie, good discussion about the differences between laminate and vinyl flooring. Good information!
Deb - good explanation of the differences between vinyl and laminate flooring... great reference blog for clients.
Good morning Debbie. You always teach me something. I thought I knew, but all the nuisances, not so much. A great job!
Great explanation on the difference between the two. I'm going to reblog...
Debbie, it is confusing for homeowners to know the difference, and you have explained it very well! Well deserved Feature!
Great post Debbie. Personally, I prefer the laminate floors to vinyl, but they each have their purpose.
Debbie
No wonder you are known as The Flooring Girl. Yet another informative post. I'll have to bookmark this, as, I get asked this question often.
When the product presented lines up with the realness of the presenter, the consumer wins big...case in point
Debbie- once again, excellent information that all of us can use. I've never thought that much about the differences, but now that I know, I don't think that laminate would be good here in South Florida with the humidity as well as kids coming in from the pool.
Great explanation! But did I miss the paragraph on Linoleum being off the market for 20 or 30 years? I still have clients asking about it and I always get a chuckle when I explain that they will have to get vinyl ... not linoleum...
WOW! Debbie. Thanks for the education of these differences with vinyl and laminate flooring. I had no idea. But, the most important thing that I learned was to call an expert like yourself FIRST.
Thanks for the clarification. To be perfectly honest, I loved vinyl flooring in the 70's when I had little kids. SOOOOOOOOOOOo easy to maintain. Oh well.
Mike - Actually, linoleum is a 3rd product. It's often also misused. When most people say linoleum, they really mean vinyl. (I wrote another post on this a while back - I'll have to find it). Linoleum is a green product made w/ linseed oil. It tends to be more expensive than vinyl; it's usually thicker and more limited in color selection; vinyl is petroleum based (the oppsosite of green). I'll have to do another post on that.
Debbie - Thank you for sharing detailed list of information about the difference between vinyl flooring and laminate flooring.
Great explaination of the difference between vinyl flooring and laminate flooring!
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!
Excellent information, Debbie. I have a question for you. On the laminate flooring, there's usually an echo or hollow sound if one walks on them with harder shoes/heels. Is there a sub-flooring which can be placed underneath it to dull that sound? I'll stop back to see. Thanks for your time and answer.
Excellent information for home owners. I enjoy your outstanding blogs.
I would vote to include political calls on the do not call list. Sometimes, we are forced to allow voice mail to screen the calls.

Juli - Yes, that's the nature of the floor and the fact that it's floated. You could try a cork underlayment which helps with the sound muffling, but it will never fully go away.
Roy - Thx. Oh, and me too!
Debbie:
I try to explain the difference to client occasionally. They end up having to talking to a flooring professional for the real difference. You have made my job so much easier. Thanks and now I am going over to the links you provided for more information.
Great information Debbie! In fact, I reblogged it and then I'm going to "Pin" it to my Home flooring Board on Pinterest! Thank you
Thank you for explaining What's the difference between vinyl flooring and laminate flooring?.
Debbie great explanation about the differences between the two. I have seen both, and even though laminate some draw backs, it has a better appearance in my opinion.
Debbie - Your posts about flooring are always so very educational for consumers and real estate professionals alike! I don't think in my 30 years as a Realtor, I've had a resource as valuable as you when it comes to doing so!
Debbie, very nice explanation about the difference in vinyl and laminate, I got some very valuable take always out of your post.
This is a great blog post, the distinction between the two is easily understood but only after reading your concise explanation.
Debbie, as always, we learn a lot from your posts.
As I was going through the post, I had a question about the pricing - somehow you dodged it, by saying - it depneds on the floor level. About the absolute cost of material, my guess is, laminate is more expensive. True?
And given the ideal conditions, what do you think will be less expensive?
P.S.: 'Dodged' is for fun only - please do not take it negatively. We come across such questions very often - and your expertise help us look 'experts' at flooring...lol.
Debbie - A great explanation on the difference between vinyl and laminate flooring to educate people.
This is the best article I have ever seen on laminate and vinal flooring. Thanks.
Roy - THx for th reblog
Evelyn - Thanks. I'm glad to hear that. And, I hope you find the other links helpful.
Lynn - Thx. You rock and doubly. Thx so much.
Michelle - You are welcome.
Hi Debbie, great explanations on the differences. I am one of those that thought that vinyl and linoleum were the same.
Debbie....THANK You! GREAT summary of what each is and have bookmarked for reference!
Deb, it was a light bulb moment with this post on vinyl vs. laminate...and i should have remembered when i had vinyl done years ago in my last home's kitchen...the prep is definitely more expensive...great share & worthy!
