Homework Comes First...

"Homework Comes First", a bronze sculpture by Martha Pettigrew at the Renton Public Library on the Cedar River.

The sculpture is very popular with kids, especially the little one's who can't resist patting and rubbing the top of his head. With all that loving attention over the past 10 years, the top of his head is slightly lighter in color than the rest of the sculpture.

"Homework Comes First" sits at the southeast entrance to the library which also serves as an entrance into Liberty Park. It's a great location and a wonderful statement to all the foot traffic passing by every day of the week.

Pettigrew's headliner on her website is "sculpture that expresses strength, dignity, and serenity" and her work certainly demonstrates that aesthetic. She has a very impressive body of work using wildlife, animals, and people in a very classic American fashion. You can see more of her work at: Martha Pettigrew

Very cool sculpture, Rene.  Kind of like a younger version of The Thinker :)

Edward & Celia... Thanks, yes that's so true. There's always homework to do!

Thanks Li... It's a beautiful sculpture.

Hi Sardi... We think alike. One of the first thoughts I had taking photos was it's like transported in time and the Big Thinker when he was a kid (before he thought too much about stuff).

Hi Rene -

I really like the bronze sculpture by Martha Pettigrew at the Renton Public Library on the Cedar River.  We have many sculptures around Albuquerque and we make a point to stop and check them out.  Hey that could be a great series for both you and I.  Well... let me complete my football series first then games on :)

I often think when kids are in school, they think that part of their life is going to last forever.  I tried to instill the idea that the only job they had during those years was to learn.  And if they really applied themselves during that opportunity, it would make a difference the remainder of their lives.  Fortunately, all of my kids loved reading, and that is a big step in getting them interested in the world around them.

Couldn't agree with you more, Myrl! I did the same. We also made a lot of trips to the library and to Half Price Books. All my kids (and I like you are blessed) are curious about the world and have a thirst for knowledge.

Debbie: It's one of my favorites and reminds in spirit of Rich Beyer's work: http://activerain.com/blogsview/2443182/donkey-run-away-

It is a great location right off the parking lot and to the library and park...
