Judsonia AR Land Office

I wish I could read what the sign says.  I can read Public sale but below that I can make out only a few words.

This is another picture from the stereoscopic views of Judsonia that was scanned and loaned to me for this blog by Melanie Murphy from Judsonia.

It is a great one showing a Land Office and the Post Office.  Perhaps some of our readers can explain what is going on in the picture.

Maybe someone else can make out the rest.  It looks like a foreclosure sale on some property of someone named P.L. Barker.  The picture could be from the late 1800s.  The Judsonia Exchange Land Office could have been the federal land office where one could either buy, called a cash land patent, or file for homestead status.  I have found, on the internet, copies of the cash land patents where my great grandfather bought the family farm near Monticello in the 1850s for 25 cents an acre.  I don't know when the program ceased but I guess when most of the land was sold.  There land sales were a primary source of funds for running the federal government until most of the land was sold.

I'll give it a try. I like to use a negative image to see letters.

Harold Gene and Don, you two have eagle eyes.  You blew it up and made it readable and how interesting that there was a land sale.  Doesn't it remind you of the land sales now that we have because folks have not paid their taxes.  I went to the one in Searcy about a month ago and listened to the bidding.  The sales people go from county to county selling tax delinquent land.  I love the picture and think it is nice for her to share.
