«Lazy» Math

The letter came in the mail. It is from Domain Registry of America. It is Domain name expiration notice. They notify me that my domain name is due to expire and they offer the renewal.

That is very thoughtful of them. The only small problem is that they are asking arm and a leg for the renewal. For one year it is $35, for two years $60 (savings of $10), and for five years it is $120 (savings of $55).

Lazy MathHmm, I just renewed my other domain on Hostway.com for a little under $9 a year. It makes me think why they would be sending the mailings that cost a lot of money. Why pay postage and send it to so many people...

Yeah, but one guy too lazy to check prices would pay for about 100 mailings. Which makes me wonder how many «lazy» people are there? Considering that I am getting these for years, there are quite a few.

At least more than 1%.

I got hit with that from Go Daddy, where I had 3 domain names.  So I went to CHEAP-DOMAIN REGISTRATION dot com and moved the domains over to them and paid less.  Maybe the next renewal, THEY may hit me with a higher price.

Hi Jon,  I'm told the number of folks who respond to unsolicited offers is staggering.  Based on the number I receive it must be working !!!

I get those things fairly often.  They are usually about a year ahead of the real renewal date too.

Bruce - GoDaddy is $12 and I pay that with no questions asked. And not moving domains, as I heard that these companies may be a problem, plus they may raise the fee. so [aying a fee to move a domain may be not working, I am not sure.

But I sure did not want to pay $35 a year

I'm constantly amazed at the small businesses that don't reconcile invoices from vendors... and when they finally do, they're shocked at the degree and frequency of errors and bogus charges.  They are selling the hosting renewal on the same sales principle (sort of) that realtors use - pour enough prospects into the top of the funnel and a satisfactory number of customers will flow out the bottom.

Bill - it should be. The expenses are enormous considering the volume of it, so there is enough to pay it and still turn the  profit

Jeanne & Ralph - I did not even check the date, but would not be surprised if this is true in my case as well.

Dan - you made me laugh. But I guess you are absolutely right, and there should even may be a formula, where there is certain number or mails produces certain number of sales.

Method of looking for the lazy

I did 10 years for about the same Jon but I can never remember the people they beat Go Daddy at the time but had been gouging me for the longest. Someone told me you just have to ask

Jon, well that is certainly no deal! They all charge more after the first year, so I guess to stay the cheapest you would have to move around every year.

Jon, it is amazing how many people respond to that, or don't make sure they are getting the best price around.

I do not have a problem with GoDaddy as a registrar.  Their fees are fair and their service is good - including 24/7 live customer service.  I pay an annual fee (similar to Amazon Prime) which gives me a discount on all domain services from GoDaddy.  You can calculate whether you do enough business with them for that discount to pay off for you.  Most of my domain names are registered with GoDaddy, but I usually look elsewhere for hosting services.

I find that you may or may not get what you pay for - but you will certainly pay for what you get.
