The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Realtors, with apologies to Stephen Covey:
Habit 1: Be proactive. Stephen Covey said that true leaders take responsibility for their behavior and for their choices. There is no place in an effective Realtor’s day for blaming others. Instead, when things go awry, our only questions are what can we do to help fix it, and how can we prevent it from happening again. (See our related post - Bus Drivers)
Habit 2: Begin with the end in mind. To be effective, Realtors need to have a goal. These goals should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. The most effective Realtors keep their goals visible and read them often – even daily. (See our related blogs – 12 Things Successful People do Differently, Finished Last will always be better than Did Not Finish, and Ready, Aim, Fire)
Habit 3: Put first things first. Stephen Covey often spoke about prioritizing tasks. Instead of putting out fires all day, have an actual plan of action for each day. (See our related posts - Where do YOU want to go today? and Road Maps to Success.)
Habit 4: Think win-win. Effective Realtors understand that in true negotiation, both sides feel like they’ve gotten a good deal. There’s no room in negotiation for snubbing the other side, or putting them down, or ridiculing them. Realtors need to focus on ensuring that both sides walk away from the deal content that their wants and needs were served.
Habit 5: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. That’s why we have two ears and only one mouth. People don't always believe what YOU tell them, but they always believe what THEY tell themselves. (See our related post – What are you WAITING for?)
Habit 6: Synergize. By this habit, Covey meant that effective people should seek to build relationships. Effective Realtors know that the name of the game is relationship building. (See our related posts – BNI Launch Day, How is Real Estate like Summer Camp, Cocktail Parties and Real Estate, 4 Tips to Great Networking, and The Wrong Way to Network.)
Habit 7: Sharpen the saw. Complacency is not a habit of effective Realtors. We’re always trying to up the ante, learn something new, try new techniques. Certainly there are few (if any) better resources for this than Active Rain.
