Water Main breaks may flood some homes or businesses in Eastchester, NY 10709

Today's water main breaks in Eastchester, NY 10709, on the New Rochelle City line  could affect home and business owners with flooding in  basements.

There are multiple water main breaks in both towns, according to the Bronxville-Tuckahoe Patch.

This type of water damage can be devastating and I just hope that no property owner, recovering from Sandy's storm damage, is affected.  We are on 24 hour call this weekend as always for advice or help with a basement full of water, for example.

Whether your home or business – or a client’s listed property -- is on a hill or not, water main breaks can send so much water through the streets that anyone can flood.  Be sure to get the water out quickly because “grey water off the street” turns to sewage – or we treat it like it is -- very quickly!

You will want to get any porous things out soon, such as cardboard storage boxes, soft furniture and even leather and certainly any rugs and padding that are not glued down.  Restoration companies like ours can get those carpets and any padding up and out before they grow mold.

It is a cooler and soon to be dry weekend, so let any carpeting or area rugs you can remove dry outside and “air out.”  Then bring them in to your heated, and/or dehumidified, space in the morning.

Also, be sure to vent or open any windows where it’s safe to have some air come in.  But, be sure to check for anything electrical depending on the water level in your property.  Home and business owners use lower levels for storage, media rooms and laundry facilities.  DO NOT walk in to water that may be over the level of an electrical socket or near your breakers and washer/drier…we’re talking a foot or two of water here.

We understand that you can contact your local community leaders for information, but they typically can’t remove the water, or a company like ours.  Remember, mold starts growing on dry wall, wall studs (the structure) and your furniture in just 48 hours after a water damage (flood)…it’s microscopic at first.

Either way, be safe in that dirty water and let us know if you have that “mildew smell” in a lower level -- it’s always good to have certified pros like ours come out for a free walk through.  We can “spray for mold prevention,” plus truly dry out your home or business.  Companies like mine have the certifications and training to dry your home and prevent more damage, like moldy basements and lower levels.  Ours are background checked and certified, too.

We hope you were on high ground, but call for help, if needed.  It’s free to take a look and check for moisture!  We'll even bring you fresh water that our guys need on the trucks...just let us know!

After any water damage situation, your primary focus should be safety first:

·          Is it safe to stay in the house?

·         Electrical and "slip and fall" hazards are some of the most prevalent concerns.

·         Only take on drying or cleanups that are safe for you and your family, in what may be sewage water.

·         Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful!

System Advantages
  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting
  • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.
  • Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
  • Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
  • Gather loose items from floors.
System Advantages
    • Don't leave wet fabrics in place. Hang furs and leather goods.
    • Don't leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
    • Don't use your household vacuum to remove water.
    • Don't use television or other household appliances.
    • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.

Great advice for those that have experienced any flooding Hillary. It is important to get the moisture out quickly and to reduce the likeliness of additional moisture related damages.

You got it, Tom, and so many don't know about the threat of mold.  Hey, I'm a San Francisco native, woefully missplaced in NY state.  LOVE your city and our state capital!  Keep dry there

Some more great tips, Hillary.  I hope those in Yonkers and the rest of Westchester are safe.  But, if they do have water damage, they should be giving Servpro a call.

Thanks so much Debbie and since our Servpro of Scarsdale / Mount Vernon is the closest of five of us, I hope they'll call me.  I'll even take them drinking water in safe bottles, until the water's back on.
