With so many social media sites on the internet nowadays, a big question is, “Which sites will I benefit from?” One of the newer websites which has taken over the social networking sphere is Pinterest, a collection of online bulletin boards where members can add their own original pins, repin, or like pins of fellow members. You follow people with similar interests, and people follow back.  As a newer technology many people are not aware of how exactly to use Pinterest in order to gain business.

One important tactic is to build relationships with your followers and the people you follow. When using Pinterest you should have a ‘If you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours’ mentality. While pinning original ideas is fun, it is necessary for your business to repin and like the pins of other members. Every time you repin or like someone else’s activity, it will send them an e-mail to notify them, getting your name out there. Pinterest is similar to Facebook and Twitter where you can tag people in your posts. Doing this will help people see who you are connected with, and there’s a strong likelihood that people will tag you back, giving you even more exposure.  The more repins or likes your pin has, the farther up on the page it will appear when being searched for.

Linking your pins back to your own site is a key component when using Pinterest. This way, when someone sees a pin they like and they click on it, it will direct them to your site, thus driving traffic your way. Another way to build your business is to post more than just your products. Explore Pinterest for a little bit to get an idea as to what makes some people have such a large following. In other words, study the successful accounts and see what they are doing right. Don’t give away too much too soon. If you plan on using Pinterest as another form of advertisement for homes you have for sale, don’t put all of the listing information in the description. Use key words to get the buyer hooked but then direct them to contact you, or visit your website for more information.

Linking your pins with other social networking sites is a great idea. When pinning something it will give you the option to add the pin to Facebook or Twitter, and since Pinterest is not as popular as those sites yet, pinning on all three is a good way to direct people that have never used Pinterest to the site, and to your specific boards.

Also, when first using Pinterest it is easy to get carried away and want to pin everything right away, but it is helpful to pin only a couple things, every couple days. This way you will be constantly showing up in the newsfeed of your followers. Take time to make sure your boards are organized and clean as well.

Every day it seems as though there is some new social media being created, but not all of them are beneficial. With these helpful tips Pinterest can be a great way to grow and expand your business.
