  • Earthquakes, flooding, and unexpected deductibles are just a few of the costs a homeowners policy might not cover, but most Americans do not realize it.
  • According to a MetLife Auto & Home Insurance Literacy Survey, many homeowners are clueless about the ins and outs of their policies, which means they could easily end up paying a lot more than they expected after damage to their home.
  • Almost half the homeowners in the MetLife survey didn’t know how much insurance coverage they had for the contents of their home, and 1 in 3 didn’t know how much their home was insured for.
  • MetLife warns that this “knowledge gap” can lead to costly surprises and recommends that homeowners review their policies more closely.

Curtis - This is a great reminder to check your insurance policy! A must do item if you've just updated your bathrooms or kitchen!

Mr. Curtis, Good warning to all those folks who think they are covered and then find out theyu are not. The same can be said for hurricanes. You need flood insurance here on the Texas Gulf Coast. All folks living in or wanting to live in Curtis market areas need to ask him for his help. You will not go wrong.

Curtis -- great advice especially as people choose to renovate and remodel rather than to sell.

Curtis,  This is SO true and so many many are under-insured or not insured at all for those unforeseen disasters.  Talk to your insurance agent and make sure you have the appropriate coverage. Talk to Curtis to point you in the right direction.

Excellent post and very true.  A significant number of homeowners policies contain percentage wind and hail deductibles that are frequently not adequately disclosed to the insured.  The percentage deductible can mean a potential claims gap of thousands of dollars.  The other thing that is frequently not explained well to the customer is how the roof is covered.  Many policies cover the roof at actual cash value as opposed to full replacement cost.
