I am in the mortgage business which means that me and my team help individuals obtain financing to purchase a home. The majority of our clients are military clients and our mission statement is to "....make a difference in the lives of the people who are making a difference". This past week-end, we had the opportunity to get boots on the ground to put that mission statement into practice and to truly make a difference in the life of one wounded warrior.
But this time, NOT with mortgage financing! I had the honor of participating in an event where the employees of the mortgage company I work for (Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation) joined with others to GIVE (yes, I did say GIVE) a wounded warrior a MORTGAGE FREE HOME! (News article HERE.)
This is actually our SECOND home give-away where we have joined forces with the Boot Campaign, a non-profit organization supporting returning American military troops, and the Military Warriors Support Foundation to donate a “mortgage free” house to a military war veteran and Purple Heart recipient. Many of the employees of Fairway committed to monthly donations to the Boot Campaign for a period of twelve months for this specific cause with the goal being to give away a mortgage free home every month for the next twelve months! Last month we gave away a home in Dallas - this month, California!
On Sunday, August 26th, Juan Castañeda, Jr., an Iraq War veteran, received the keys to his mortgage-free home during the 2nd Annual Boot Ride and Rally in Hollywood, California. Castañeda, the son of a Vietnam War veteran, joined the Army in 2005 and was stationed to the 82nd Airborne Field Artillery Regiment at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina. He served in Iraq and was injured on August 31, 2006 in an ambush near Ad Dwar. Castañeda suffered a fully collapsed left eardrum and other head injuries and underwent four major surgeries.
He received the Purple Heart along with other medals and honors, and hopes to finish school and raise a family. Castaneda is the proud parent of a two-year-old daughter. “I want to thank Fairway,” Castañeda said. “This new home means the world to me and my family. "

It was also pretty cool to team up with the Boot Campaign and the stars of the hit FX drama “Sons of Anarchy” in Hollywood, where several hundred bikers “got their boots on” and coasted down the Sunset Strip to raise funds for the Boot Campaign’s partner charities. The Boot Ride culminated at a rally at The Happy Ending Bar and Restaurant with a live performance by Blackberry Smoke and red carpet appearances by Sons of Anarchy cast members and other celebrities.
