Happy Labor Day! A Guaranteed day off for American Workers
Labor Day, a guaranteed day off for american workers, was created before Americans had a defined work week, designated hours, age restrictions and pay requirements. It’s interesting to look at Labor Day from the perspective of what it meant to be a “worker” in 1882.
Labor Day, was one of the rare days an American worker had off to spend time with family, go on a picnic, attend a parade or dance in the park as they did in New York in 1882.
According to the United States Department of Labor:Labor Day, an annual tribute to the contributions American working people have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country!
The Department of Labor was created by President Taft March 1913 is celebrating it’s 100th year and serves the American worker by establishing improved work conditions. A few of the things I found most interesting in the timeline: The five day workweek began in 1930, Fair Labor Standards Act 1938 standardized the 40-hour work week, wage and child labor laws, the GI Bill 1945, equal rights, job training. Take a look, you might find it interesting too.
