Apple's iCloud: Is it for you?

Crashing hard drives and dead phones are such a hassle when they happen, and what is worst is the loss ofiCloud invaluable information that we use on a daily basis. After suffering from lost contacts and information over and over after a phone or computer crash, I was so excited about the Apple iCloud. I just purchased an iPhone around six months ago, and the iCloud discovery has made my year so much easier.

As a hard core Mac user, I love everything they make. But this features has brought me so much joy. The iCloud now synchs my iPhone and MacBook Pro with the contacts, calendar and notepad. I can set an appointment in one device and within seconds the other one is updated. No more worries about lost data in a crash. My contacts are the same, instant updates. And I can set alerts through the calendar feature and they will ring on both devices at the same time. I can't miss an appointment if I try.

Last week I discovered another feature of the iCloud. I mean, I kind of knew about it but didn't really know how it worked and hadn't had a use for it. You can store all of your iTunes in the cloud as well. I saw that when I was setting the iCloud up, and turned that off as I thought it would surely cost a fortune. But last week when I was looking at something else, I saw that it is only $24.95 for a year! to store a ton of music. I am a huge fan of books on tape so I thought that would be nice. But still, I was concerned with all of that data! So I called my cell carrier. They (Verizon) told me that the data stored in the iCloud is just that, stored in the cloud, and not on my phone. Data is only what is used, like playing a song, not what is stored out there somewhere in space. So I took the plunge. There are now over 6,ooo songs and books I can access anytime, anywhere (My Partner is a music junkie...). Sweet.

Not a Mac user? I see that iCloud and iTunes are available for PC's as well. Check the iCloud out!

Is the Apple iCloud for you?

Jerri, putting everything in the Cloud scares me. I don't kow why but I can't wrap my head around it. I'm sure I'll be forced into it one day.

Hi Eric, I know what you mean. I think I was nervous at first as well. But I am so tired of starting over everytime a phone dies...I did not opt to save things like bookmarks and other more personal info. I just love the concept of access no matter what.

Hi Jerri, great blog, I use dropbox and google calendar to do most of the things that you are doing with icloud and it works well, regardless of which tool, it is really nice to have such easy access to the same data whether we are on our laptops, tablets, or smartphones.

I would caution you though, I think that your Verizon person may have giving you the wrong info, they DO charge for transfer of data between your phone and the cloud so everytime that you listen to a song that is stored on the cloud you are paying for data transfer fees, where as if you keep your songs stored on an sd card on your phone you will not be incurring those charges.

Jerri, I enjoyed your iCloud blog and I love iCloud as well and am using the iTunes Match as well as an upgraded storage account and it works great and I like it better than MobileMe and am hopeful that it will eventually allow us to manually push files to it that aren't Mac / Apple files similar to DropBox.
