Recycling

Recycling is something that can probably be done in many ways!

And all sorts of things can be recycled.

Take air for instance.  Who wouldn't want moving air?

This house touted two brand new, and professionally remodeled bathrooms in its features list.

And they were!

New everything - fixtures, tile, floor, mirrors, lights, even exhaust fans.

Climbing into the attic I noticed that even the discharge tubing was new! The old tubing for one of them was enthusiastically cast to the side, no longer needed!

For both bathrooms!

Impressive - top to bottom these bathrooms were new.

And just look how the exhaust fans are aimed at each other!

Recycling!  It's not often that air is recycled.  I remember they recycled the air on Apollo 13, and it worked great!  So why not here?

Is this recycling at its best?

My recommendation:  even when new work is done, or better put ESPECIALLY when new work is done, have it investigated by a home inspector!  You don't know what might turn up!  These bathrooms were apparently never vented through the roof anywhere.  So, when the remodeling was done, they only had to vent them the way it had been done previously, right?

Wrong...

Gary - when interesting things abound, it is fun to write about it!

Mike - very creative.  What, not into recycling?

Ritu - they didn't make a mistake!  They did this on purpose!  Too lazy to do it right...

Why bother to do it right if it never was right. Is that a periscope for a U boat?

That is too funny!  They must have put some thought into the placement of the tubing.  And this is yet another example of when you need a home inspector. I am sure that most people don't think about doing this when remodeling their home.

Hi Jay,

Looks like the work these builders do around here. Why are the simplest of things the hardest to do right?

Have a good day in Bristow, Virginia.

Best, Clint McKie

I couldn't believe they replaced the attic periscope with tubing that can't see much Jim.  But alas.

Kathryn - they even expanded the end of one so it would capture more recycled material!

Jay - While recycling may be good for the environment, recycling bathroom air may not be in that category. (It's sometimes amazing just how some "contractors" seem to think their shortcuts won't be discovered.)

Because they are done by people who don't know or don't care Clint.  Sadly.

That's the point John!  But it was fun to write about.  I thought the title would be catching!  And fetching!

Either an operable window (we all know we open the window in the middle of winter to make sure the humidity goes outside, right?) or a exhaust fan vented to the outside.

Your posts leave me very skeptical about all contractors. We recycle our bathroom air with the outdoor air.

Well, Than, you joke but I have seen all vents in the attic closed off so NO air can escape, or winter cold get in!

Doug - that is the best place to recycle it!  Plants automatically turn it into oxygen for us!

Jay, it would have been better for the attic if they connected the two vents together :)

Good morning Jay. You have made me look at new builds in a completely different way. I once thought you were good to go with new but not any more.
