Did you know that in the past 50 years the amount of waste each person creates increased from 2.7 to 4.4 pounds per day? How we choose to handle our waste can have a huge impact on our land, water and air----our environment. Keeping our environment healthy keeps us healthy, so it's important to reduce, reuse and recycle, otherwise known as practicing the "Three R's".

Reduce:
The amount of toxicity and trash you throw away. the best way to do that is by not creating it in the first place. Start by buying and using only what you need and avoiding products with excessive packaging. Avoid single-serve containers, for example, by buying larger container of bottle water and refilling washable, reusable sports bottles when you go to the gym, on a hike or bike ride. Stop junk mail and unwanted catalogs.

Reuse:
Materials and delay their entry in the waste collection system. Wash and reuse disposable plastic cups, plates, utensils and food storage bags at least a few times. Replace paper napkins with washable cloth napkins and give gifts in reusable bags instead of wrapping them. Donate surplus building materials to Habitat for Humanity and give unwanted furniture and clothing to Goodwill or The Salvation Army. Many items can be repaired by those groups and redistributed into other homes rather than tossed in landfills.

Recycle:
Cardboard, paper, plastic, metal, glass, electronic equipment and yard waste (leave, grass) rather than pitching everything in the trash. Making new items from recycled ones takes less energy and fewer resources than making products from new materials. By reducing, reusing and recycling, you can save natural resources and potentially shrink waste costs in some cases. By practicing the three Rs, you can become a key player in making our world a safe and healthy place to live.
