There Is More Than One Way To Succeed At Real Estate. (Gasp!!!)

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Christiansen Group Realty (260)704-0843

One of the things I love MOST about selling real estate is that (believe it or not) there are MANY different ways to succeed, and MANY different ways to do things.

I know, I know, there are many real estate gurus and type A personalities that will tell you that THEIR way is the right way, and what you are doing is wrong.  I've heard and read that way too many times.  Heck, I've said it a few times.

But here is the reality.  Real estate is such a wide open game.  It's a local game.  It's an individual game that works differently for each person.

Put your seat belt on here...

THERE IS MORE THAN ONE WAY TO SUCCEED AT REAL ESTATE.

There.  I said it.

I interviewed an agent the other day.  She used to sell real estate, but got out of it in 2008 for some personal reasons.  She said that she was ready to get back in the game and was very excited to join our team.

During the interview, she told me that she got most of her business from open houses, knocking on doors, and going to networking groups.

I cringed.  I despise all three of those things.  I tried to talk to her about social networking, Facebook, and a few of the other methods that I use that make us successful.  She thanked me, and went on to tell me more  how she succeeded doing things HER way.

She opened my mind.  These were things that she was truly good at, and doing these things made her successful in real estate.

Every once in a while I like to pound my chest and say that my way is the right way.  Well, it's the right way for ME.  It may not be for YOU.

Mind:  Opened.  Ego:  Checked.  Lesson:  Learned.

Do your own thing.  Do what works for you.

It is nice to have a team where everyone contributes in a different way.  Team members attaining leads in ways we despise ourselves, very helpful.

Jared: Even if you do it "their" way, the results are totally different. I do it MY WAY as well! However, I do listen to what others do. You never know.

My brother, type A, always likes to give me advice on how to increase my business.  He is not even a realtor, LOL!! :)  I have found that referrals are my bread and butter.  And, of course, I have obtained clients from AR as well.  :)

Jared:  Brilliantly written!  Brilliantly expressed!  Who's to argue with success?  It comes in many different packages.  Sounds like YOU will be the happy recipient of this agent's techniques and success.  Not bad, my friend ... and pretty darn wise ...

Amen!  We all have to do what works for us.  I believe that there is no ONE way to do this job.  That is what makes it all work.

Congrats on the feature.  So true, so true.  Each person/agent has their strong points and their weak points and hopefully they know the difference and use their strong points to work "at their best." Great post

You must absolutely do what works for you. If we all did the same thing, we would not be able to service the multitude of clients looking for agents with different personalities.

Is she going to be working with you?  That might be a nice compliment to those activities you don't like to do.  Might be a well-rounded business plan overall.

It can difficult to hear another agent's perception of how things "work", but the reality is that your heart is in the right place. We all want one another to succeed and we want to make things "easier". But as you figured out, what may work for you or be easier for you, may not be for someone else. Now, it is a different story if they are struggling or failing. But you are right...they are many different methods to be successful and achieve great results in this business!

So True!  I had a agent friend that had a consistent 6 figure income from doing only ONE thing - (UGHH) It was Open Houses. Every weekend she had Open Houses.  It was the thing that she excelled at and the one thing that I can't stand!

Wow! Very well said - and absolutely correct.  The more comfortable one is with what they are doing, the more their confidence is projected to another. Being able to have "Mind:  Opened.  Ego:  Checked.  Lesson:  Learned." = a great (and successful) leader, too.

Great job listening and allowing them to talk.  I agree with Wayne and Jean that your line"Mind:  Opened.  Ego:  Checked.  Lesson:  Learned."  is a great line, motto and something we all need to remember.

Thank you for sharing this!

No argument here. Just as everyone does not like the same TV show, flavor of ice cream, or method of advertising, there are opportunities for success following different paths. Just choose and get after it.
