Dear TZ,
My kitchen is a little dingy and we were thinking about painting it. But now my husband's job is moving and we're going to have to sell. Should we paint now, or is it better to let the buyer pick out a paint color themselves?

Dear Carole,
Paining is usually a good thing to do before putting your house on the market.
Here's what you should consider doing. Paint any walls or rooms that have bright or dark colors with a neutral colored paint. Eggshell, ivory or a light beige are nice colors that will match most anything. If you have any paint that's peeling or looks really old, consider scraping, sanding and repainting, again with a neutral color.
If you're a smoker, you should definitely paint. Consider a paint that masks the smoke smell. You can even add some vanilla extract to the paint before applying. But DON'T smoke in the house as that could really turn off a potential buyer.
If there's any holes or joints showing you should spackle and tape before painting.
The bottom line is that you don't need to spend a lot of money to improve the look of the home and a small investment of time and money might even bring you more money when you sell.
Good Luck!!
