Good Morning Everyone!
I hope everyone's weekend was great! As you can tell, the highlight of my weekend was seeing a Barcelona chair up close and personal. I was SO excited, I kind of "nerded out" for a minute. I even got to sit in it! Everyone around me must have thought I was crazy, but I don't care! The Barcelona chair is one of my favorite chairs in the whole world!
I remember, thinking back to my days in design school, seeing and drooling over a piece of art known as the Barcelona chair in a small, but thick book called 1,000 Chairs.
I instantly fell in love with the Barcelona chair and the book! If you get a chance, try to check this book out. It has photos of all kinds of chairs and it shares their historical background. If you are a design junkie like me, it is a pretty neat book!
Here is a little background on the Barcelona chair and the designer....
The designer of the Barcelona is actually an architect from Germany who moved to America, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969).
Van der Rohe is most commonly known for creating the
glass skyscraper. Most of the skyscrapers you see in Chicago were either designed by Van der Rohe or designed after Van der Rohe's original skyscrapers. His design style is known as "Modernism" and that is exactly what the Barcelona chair is considered.
The Barcelona chair was designed in 1929 for the International Exposition in Barcelona, Spain. The Barcelona Pavilion was created and inside you can see the Barcelona chair.
