Hollis New Hampshire Celebrates Old Home Days

      In 1899 by Gov. Frank West Rollins New Hampshire's Old Home Days was established to bring folks who had headed to the west back to the small towns of New Hampshire.    Hollis New Hampshire

    Old Home Days faded away in many parts of New Hampshire and was re-established in Hollis, New Hampshire in 1996 in commemoration of the town's 250th anniversary.   Today, there are at approximately 57 Old Home Days events throughout New Hampshire.

    This year, the Hollis Old Home Days begins Friday, September 14 starting at 5:00 P.M and ending at 9:00 p.m. on September 15  with the annual fire works display.

   Hollis Old Home Days will be held at Nichols Field on Depot Road in Hollis, NH.

Schedule of Events     hollis town hall   

Friday, Sept. 14:

  • 5-7 p.m. –  Tethered hot air balloon rides ($5 per person).
  • 5-9 p.m. – Lizzi the Balloon Artist.
  • 6-10 p.m. – Amusement rides and Midway open.
  • 7-10 p.m. – Teen Dance with DJ Chip McConney of Paige2.

Saturday, Sept. 15:

  • 10 a.m.-3:55 p.m. – Cow Patty Bingo tickets for sale at Rotary booth.
  • 10 a.m.-5 p.m. – All vendor and organization booths open.
  • Ongoing demonstrations:
  • Rug hooking, spinning, cross-stitch, wood turning, Acapella Alpaca petting zoo, various Hollis Art Society artists.
  • Theme Tent – “Always Ready” Honoring Hollis DPW, fire and police.
  • 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. – Entertainment: Live Music and Dance Performances (Performance Tent).
  • 10 a.m.-5 p.m. – Silent Auction (Lawrence Barn).
  • 10 a.m.-8:30 p.m. – Amusements and Midway will be open.
  • 10 a.m. – Main Street closed for Parade.
  • 10:30 a.m. – Parade starts at Hollis /Brookline Middle School and travels along Main Street, past the Town Common, ending at Nichols Field.
  • 11 a.m. – Entry Deadline for Apple Pie Contest.
  • 11:30 a.m. – Apple Pie Contest Judging.
  • 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. – Car, truck and tractor show.
  • Noon – Flag raising by the Hollis Scouts. National Anthem and God Bless America sung by John Ogrodowczyk accompanied by the Hollis Town Band (Performance Tent).
  • 12:05-2 p.m. – Hollis Area Equestrian Versatility Demo (Lawrence Barn horse ring).
  • 12:15-1 p.m. – Band Concert by the Hollis Town Band (Performance Tent).
  • 12:30-1 p.m. – Demonstration of the Always Ready Defender (Nichols Field south end of track).
  • 1-2 p.m. – HFD Children’s Muster (Nichols Field south end of track).
  • 3-7 p.m. – Acoustic Music Performances (BBQ Tent).
  • 2-3 p.m. – Field Day events for all ages (Nichols Field south end of track).
  • 2 p.m. – Hollis Class of 1962 gathering at BBQ tent.
  • 3:30-7 p.m. – Chicken BBQ (BBQ tent).
  • 4 p.m. – Hollis/
    Brookline Rotary Cow Pattie Bingo (Waugaman Field).
  • 5-7 p.m. – RE/MAX tethered hot-air balloon rides ($5 per person).
  • 5-8 p.m. – Lizzi the Balloon Artist.
  • 5 p.m. – Bidding ends for the silent auction items (Lawrence Barn).
  • 6 p.m. – Retiring of the flag by Hollis Scouts.
  • 6-7 p.m. – Announcement of silent auction winners.
  • 7-7:50 p.m. – Silent auction winners pick up at the Lawrence Barn (cash and checks only).
  • 7:50 p.m. – Lawrence Barn closes.
  • 8 p.m. – Fireworks (rain date: Sunday, Sept. 16).

Sunday, Sept. 16:

  • 8 a.m.-noon – Field Clean Up; volunteers welcome.
  • 1-3 p.m.: Silent auction winners pick up at the Lawrence Barn (cash and checks only).
  • 8 p.m. – Rain date for fireworks.

     The schedule is subject to last-minute changes. In case of heavy rain, events will be postponed until Sunday with a modified schedule.

      Pie contest entries due by 11 a.m. Saturday.  The Hollis Woman’s Club will sponsor the annual apple pie baking contest on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Hollis Old Home Days celebration on Depot Road in Hollis.There will be three entry divisions: Children, ages 12 and older; students ages 13-21; and adults ages 22 and older.  The entry rules are:

  • 1. Only one entry per person.
  • 2. No entry fee.
  • 3. Entry must be a home-prepared, traditional two-crust apple pie – no mixes.
  • 4. All entries must be submitted to the Hollis Woman’s Club table by 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15. Judging will occur at 11:30 a.m.
  • 5. A recipe should accompany each entry, specifying the variety/varieties of apples used.
  • 6. Decision of judges will be final.
  • 7. All pies become the property of the Hollis Woman’s Club and will be cut and sold by the piece following judging.
  • 8. Ribbons will be awarded for the top three entries in each division.

Joan,  This sounds like it was a wonderful plan to bring people back to New Hampshire for a visit and also provide lots of entertainment and fun for the local folks.. It sounds like what our towns do and call it homecoming.  Hope it was very successful this year.
